I really wanted to learn more about minimalism and the zero waste lifestyle, and I originally just saw the homesteading basics as a bonus. but it turns out that both books were AWESOME!!! they were both great reads, they had tons of info but were also easy to read. highly recommended!!!!!!

Awesome box set, everything you need to start chaning your life

This is a great box set. I really love the whole minimalism thing, and building a life with less is definitely something I want to try. I've read a lot about self sufficiency and homesteading, and I was really pleased to find a box set that helped me put a plan together with a real motivation to build some of the great advice into my life.

Well worth a read, great books with a lot to offer in an age when we should be going back to a simpler, more sustainable life

Exponential smoothing methods have been around since the 1950s, and are the most popular forecasting methods used in business and industry. Recently, exponential smoothing has been revolutionized with the introduction of a complete modeling framework incorporating innovations state space models, likelihood calculation, prediction intervals and procedures for model selection. In this book, all of the important results for this framework are brought together in a coherent manner with consistent notation. In addition, many new results and extensions are introduced and several application areas are examined in detail.

Rob J. Hyndman is a Professor of Statistics and Director of the Business and Economic Forecasting Unit at Monash University, Australia. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Forecasting, author of over 100 research papers in statistical science, and received the 2007 Moran medal from the Australian Academy of Science for his contributions to statistical research.

Anne B. Koehler is a Professor of Decision Sciences and the Panuska Professor of Business Administration at Miami University, Ohio.�She has numerous publications, many of which are on forecasting models for seasonal time series and exponential smoothing methods.

J.Keith Ord is a Professor in the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, Washington DC.� He has authored over 100 research papers in statistics and its applications and ten books including Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics.

Ralph D. Snyder is an Associate Professor in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics at Monash University, Australia. He has extensive publications on business forecasting and inventory management. He has played a leading role in the establishment of the class of innovations state space models for exponential smoothing.

The standard work on Exponential Smoothing

Groundbreaking approach to exponential smoothing. I found the most useful information to be 1) the inclusion of all 30 ETS models (although some models have limited utility) into a standardized framework, 2) prediction intervals for most ETS models, 3) constraints for the model parameters, and 4) models for choosing the best of the 30 models for each data set.
1) The book goes beyond the traditional Holt-Winters, double- and single-exponential smoothing to incorporate 30 potential models. CC Pegels' models are included in this group.
2) The prediction intervals have been very helpful in being able to set safety stock levels. In the past, I could only rely on regression models for such prediction intervals.
3) There is also a chapter dedicated to parameter constraints that is often overlooked in exponential smoothing.
4) The models for choosing which of the 30 models to employ for a given data set help to hone in on the best projections
I found the book to have covered all major aspects of Exponential Smoothing. I can't imagine employing ETS models without it.

Both theory and how-to

This work provides for exponential smoothing what Box and Jenkins "Time Series Analysis: Forecasting and Control" provided for ARIMA models -- an accessible theoretical framework.

Exponential smoothing is a widely used forecasting method that does well in forecasting competitions because it's robust and flexible.

The fact that Hyndman also has a nice R package implementing this framework is an added plus. [...]

Currently way over my head. I have some of Hyndman's other titles and I was ok with those. Exponential smoothing is the method used in the new Excel 2016 forecast module so worth getting up to speed on.

The author's books are always about making the lives of children, and their families, happy, interesting, satisfying, and geared to the stage of development of each child. Her experience in this area is broad and international. Susan has studied child development and happiness in many countries since her first trip through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia in 1963. She has degrees in philosophy, comparative religions, and education. In London, England, in 1971 she was awarded the AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) diploma for teaching children from 2.5-6 years of age. Since then she has earned 0-3 and 6-12 diplomas. Child of the World offers very good advice to support the Montessori lessons of practical life activities, sensorial experiences, language, math and geometry, art and music social studies, and the physical and life sciences, from age 3-12. It has been referred to as "a Montessori course in one volume." Susan Stephenson has been teaching in the Montessori field since 1970, has read all of Dr. Montessori's books, and has pulled out the quotes that are most helpful to parents and teachers. This book offers kind guidance along a sure path for development the skills and attributes that will assist a child in preparing for life. It is welcomed into Montessori training centers, schools, and homes worldwide as a clear and concise guide to basic Montessori principles.

Simple introduction to values of Montessori style of education

Sometimes it is the simple quiet moments for a child to discover things and not the constant push to educate. This book makes you reflect on showing children the simple basic building blocks that have the potential to create compassionate well adjusted adults who understand their connection to the environment. I will pass this book on to other grandmothers and my adult children so that they can begin to apply some of the principles in this book.
I wish she would write more on this topic.

Splatter Punk meets Manga

Magical Girl Apocalypse is gory, nasty, goofy and moves at a break neck pace. The set up is brief, and within the first few pages blood is being spilled, flesh is being ripped and creepy girls are screaming "magical". Oh, and there are zombies. Magical girl zombies who are strong enough to smash someone's head with one fist.

First off, this book is gory. No, not just violent. Gory. Characters are not just killed, but ripped to shreds, and it is all drawn in dripping, stomach churning detail. Anyone and everyone can, and most likely will, die in horrific and brutal ways. This is both a strength of this book, and a weakness. It's a strength in that the stakes are sky high, and the reader is never made to feel comfortable. It weakens the book in the fact, that outside of the two main characters, the reader is not given a group of characters to connect with. While the group starts to solidify a bit towards the end, it is hard to become invested in any one particular character when you realize how disposable they are. Still, if a character annoys you (and there are a few that have major potential) just rest easy knowing that in a page or two they will probably be burned alive, or be sliced in half. So... yay!

This volume is almost all set up. It is establishing the threat, and the many creepy cute forms it can take. Once the attack starts (and that is within the first five or ten pages), the pace never slows. There are a few quick glimpses as to what is causing the attack, and maybe a vague hint or two as to who or what may be behind the sudden appearance of the magical girls, but the actually plot is very limited, as most of the page count is spent on characters fleeing, and more often than not, dying violently. There is some humor to be found in these pages, and with the over the top nature of the whole story, it fits well.

The magical girls themselves are very creepy, with a wide eyed, doll like appearance that is in sharp contrast to the more typical manga looking main characters. Their clothes, weapons, and lifeless faces are wonderfully designed, and show real skill and creativity. The human characters are varied looking, with detailed expressions, although there are some issues when it comes to the female characters, with some one of the more well endowed characters chests not only defying physics, but also basic anatomy. Still, each character has a distinct look and feel, and in a cast this large, that is key to helping the reader keep the who's who straight. The gore, as I said, is drawn in detail. Heads are ripped open or blown off, holes are blown through bodies, people are impaled, ripped in half... you get the idea. Obviously, this book is not for the weak stomached or the sensitive.

If you are looking for a true splatter manga, then Magical Girl Apocalypse is perfect for you. If you are looking for actual magic girls, though, look elsewhere.

Unexpectedly, the worst of all possible apocalypses

Wow. Just... wow. I find myself at a bit of a loss as to how to describe this book, which is better than it has a right to be given the totally gonzo premise. If you thought "Madoka Magica" gave the magical girl genre a scary twist, you haven't seen anything yet.

So, a bit of minor first-chapter plot stuff first... [MINOR SPOILERS, BUT NO MORE THAN IS ON THE JACKET COPY] Teenager Kii is having a run-of-the-mill day at high school when a freaky little girl in a gothic Lolita outfit (pictured on the front cover) blasts through his classroom window while he's in the bathroom. He returns to a bloodbath, arriving just in time to see the last of his friends killed by this menace. He manages to temporarily defeat her and discovers that at least one classmate did survive -- Tsukune, a painfully shy girl who was once a good friend of his and who has lately been the victim of bullying. But then the magical girl revives, and his dead classmates start to rise... wearing frilly dresses. [END MINOR SPOILER]

MGA wins points in several areas. The artwork, while sometimes gory and gruesome to the point of repulsive, is excellent and appropriate for the story it's telling. Also, don't worry that the whole thing looks like "Sailor Moon, Directed by Tim Burton" -- only the magical girls look like that, and the setting and other characters are drawn in a more normal style. Also, the suspense factor is through the roof with this story. Imagine if a zombie event on the level of "Dawn of the Dead" occurred, only the zombie hordes were being led by intelligent beings with superhero-level powers and insatiable bloodlust. Not since "Marvel Zombies" have I seen an apocalypse I'd be more desperate to avoid, and the very idea that a normal person could survive this for the duration seems unthinkable. I read the whole book in one sitting.

On the negative side, MGA only wins originality points for its combination, not its execution. The similarities to "High School of the Dead" (very much) and "Madoka Magica" (somewhat) are strong enough that this hellscape feels like retread ground in a lot of ways. The plot so far has also been minimal -- the action is happening too fast for anything beyond individual character development to occur, and the apocalypse comes unexplained. (I think I may have already figured it out based on the "Chekov's Gun" principle, but time will tell on that.) And finally, the gore might be too much for even some hardened horror-hounds. There are some seriously twisted deaths in this thing.

Overall, I would rate "Magical Girl Apocalypse" about 3.5 stars, but I'll give it the benefit of a doubt and bump it up to 4. It did keep me on the edge of my seat, and I will be coming back to see what happens.

Too dang good.

This Manga is really good. I tell anybody to read this manga and continue to read it. The first volume might turn people off in the slightest, but the awesome story gets better and better through each chapter and volume. I encourage anybody to read this Manga. This is really gory as hell and the idea of zombie like magical girl's is awesome.
