Over the course of the evening, Bud is upset and recounts how it’s his birthday and his estranged daughter didn’t call. Lou is devastated by his relationship (or non-relationship) with his ex-girlfriend. The music begins... Norma appears and starts crossing the room. Bud is ready yet terrified to deal with what is to follow. She arrives... but crosses right past the hopeful Bud to the devastated Lou and asks him to dance. Lou looks to Bud. Bud nods sadly, and Lou walks away with the alluring Norma. But all is not lost. Just as Bud picks up his knitting, the door opens and in walks Bud’s daughter. “Happy Birthday, Daddy. I was looking all over for you...” and they walk off into the night. The Knitting Club is a story of faith and friendship, telling how things even infinitely small can be a person’s entire world. Pictures of finished projects often unclear

This is a nice looking book and the instructions for the projects may very well be good but it's unlikely I'll ever need them. The pictures of the finished projects are nice looking (as pictures) but it's often difficult to see details due to busy backgrounds, similar coloured backgrounds, and camera angles. Some of the pictures are clearer but unfortunately for me they're the projects I don't like very much. The ones I like I won't be able to make because I'm not really sure exactly what they look like.

About the Author
Charles Goodwin is Professor of Applied Linguistics at UCLA. His interests include video analysis of talk-in-interaction; grammar in context; cognition in the lived social world; gesture, gaze, and embodiment as interactively organized social practices; aphasia in discourse; language in the professions; and the ethnography of science. Goodwin has done fieldwork analyzing family interaction in the United States, the work of oceanographers in the Amazon, archaeologists in the United States and Argentina, and the organization of talk, vision, and embodied action in the midst of surgery. As part of the Workplace Project at Xerox PARC, he investigated cognition and talk-in-interaction in ground operations at a major airport. As a member of the Sloan-funded Center for Everyday Lives of Families, he participated in an intensive cross-disciplinary project investigating the daily lives of middle-class, two-wage-earner families in Los Angeles. His publications include Conversational Organization: Interaction Between Speakers and Hearers, Rethinking Context: Language as an Interactive Phenomenon (edited with Alessandro Duranti), Conversation and Brain Damage, and Il Senso del Vedere: Pratiche Sociali della Significazione.

Great textbook!

This book is great. It's not arbitrarily dense, or just a bunch of fluff. The author speaks TO the reader, not AT the reader. Bitter clearly has a great deal of experience from a diverse background and is passionate about the field, as well as insightful. While I find many textbooks hardly worth the effort of translating their arcane confusing text into actual useable knowledge, this book stands out as being challenging yet readable, and ultimately - and most importantly - it's relevant.

Having just completed a cursory reading of this text, I am extremely pleased with its style and content. Dr. Bitter prepared this text with the student in mind, and accomplishes the task of offering a guide to clinical understanding of the many theories of psychotherapy as applied to families. My only regret lay in the absence of addressing psychoanalytic object relations theory, but since that is one of my specialties, I can certainly supplement that in my teaching.By offering a hypothetical family presenting for family therapy, he sets about teaching several different theoretical perspectives by which the practitioner works with the family. I will certainly utilize this text for future course instruction. Walton H. Ehrhardt, EdD

Excellent overview of most theories for MFTs

This is one of few textbooks I actually enjoyed reading and kept up with for class. It is easy to read and the format allows you to reference what you need to find quickly. Bitter is easy to understand and illustrates the theories very well. There is not a chapter for "Contextual Theory", but there is a very informative one about parenting that I found interesting. Overall, a very valuable book for students learning about Family Therapy and perhaps even good for brushing up on what you might have forgotten.

Highly Enjoyable Read

I really enjoyed “The Do-Over” and decided to try another book from MK Schiller. Again she did not disappoint and I loved this book as well. The story was basically about damaged Marley who did not do relationship. However, she and Rick, a consultant brought to reengineer the company she worked in, shared a strong physical attraction. Initial flirtations led to a friends with benefits relationship. Rick was very protective of Marley and wanted more out of the relationship which she pushed back. The book was funny and yet had its serious moments plus Marley’s unusual family supplemented wonderfully to the story.

He's a Magic Man....

This bk has one adorable Hero, Rick, and is filled with sexual tension, it's flirty fun early on, there's hot sex scenes and plenty of romantic drama because of the h/Marley's fear of commitment due to her trauma from the past. Two people you know are going to fall in love but the story takes its time in the telling. That Rick though....what a keeper and definitely book boyfriend worthy. Rick's a classy alpha...very possessive from the get go, even before he and Marley became an item (jaw clenching over guys numbers in her phone). He's bossy, protective, did I mention possessive? sexy hot, sexual innuendo smirking, romantic, gentlemanly, sweet and all kinds of wonderful. (Yea, I'm gushing) And he supposedly looks like Chris Pine!

What bothered me? I don't like it when it takes one of the characters f-o-r-e-v-a to come clean with their dilemma. Marley sort of got on my nerves when she was pushing Rick away (due to fear) and made me impatient when I wanted her to just tell Rick her problem and move forward with it. But, yes, yes, (forehead smack) I know...that's part of the story. The build up to the "reveal" of the problem, of course, leads to some angst. The angst is not over the top though (I hate angst...love the drama, but my impatience and angst? Uh uh...they don't mix well).

Loved Marley's funky family....they're all named after someone musical. But Marley's gay OCD friend Dillon was endearing. Adam, Marley's soon to be brother-in-law is loveably cool. And just wait until you get to Adam's wedding vows to Marley's sister Stevie. To die for! (Be ready to swoon, ladies). It's a shame the author didn't write Adam/Stevie's bk first. There was just enough of these two characters to make you feel like they were worth reading more of (you'll see).

Overall a cute story with a wonderful Hero but wished the HEA hadn't been so rushed. It would have been more enjoyable for me to have had Rick/Marley's HEA drawn out longer with more dialog. Will be looking forward to what this author does next.

About the Author
Steve Rhodes was born in Austria where he spent his childhood and studied mechanical engineering-management before moving to London. While at university, he won a nationwide search for best music-newcomer and subsequently got signed to Columbia records as a singer & composer. Various TV, radio and other media appearances followed. Steve later built his own recording studio and established himself as a music producer. He also had his own film studio and produced music videos incorporating early 3D computer animation. In 2003, he was introduced to the Human Design system and began to study with the founder Ra Uru Hu. He then lived for a few years on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza where Ra lived. Until 2010, Steve owned one of the leading recording studios in London (Alpha Centauri Recording) that was used by U2, Kanye West, M.I.A., Depeche Mode and many others.

One of the better HD manuals to get your hands on. But...

This book is a blessing for anyone interested in Human Design, as it provides some of the "deeper" aspects of HD, without having to "wait", live your "S & A", or pay out the nose for massive amounts of written or spoken material, just to be able to extract the basic yet valuable information presented in Steve's book. If you're into HD and looking to deepen your knowledge of how this fascinating system works, this book (at least the Kindle edition) is well worth the money.
I give it 3 stars for a few reasons. First of all, Steve really needs to hire an editor. The grammar in this manual is pathetic! My first read I spotted hundreds of errors, and I find that rather distracting while trying to learn about a system. Secondly, HD is theoretical at best, and presenting it as some kind of scientific revelation about who you are genetically is quackery, plain and simple. It's a numbers game (think astrology meets the Rubik's Cube) and a "hand fits glove" new age system, not a science. While much of it (especially PHS) is amazingly accurate, it's only right on about a percentage of what it claims to know about you. I'm an active part of the HD community, and I intermingle with both fanatics and casual users. I have to say, the fanatics are as bad as any other culty scene, while the casual users are a lot of fun and HD adds a nice dynamic to conversation. But, it's by no means a blueprint of your genetic makeup! Thirdly, there's a a little too much personal opinion in Steve's interpretation of what the different aspects of the system say about an individual--which is common among HD "analysts" and "guides". And, like all the other authors in the field, he neglects to back up his views with any facts or reasoning as to why there are extreme variations between people with nearly identical charts. This would, of course, be due to the individual's conditioning. But, I was kind of hoping for a bit more of an objective look into HD, as we already have multitudes of subjective material regarding this system.

Wonderfully informative!

This book was amazing. I have been reveling in Human Design for the last couple of years and had questions about it that I couldn't find the answers to. This book helps put the pieces together with further analysis of the body graph. Even if you have never heard of Human Design the author does a very good job of explaining the differences of our individual paths in a way that makes logical sense. I recommend this book to everyone for a taste of what humanity is giving birth to as well as who we as individuals really are.

Steve expands the general human design knowledgebase with this. This really is 5 star material. Not only does he cover the basics but he goes into "advanced" areas and makes them simple. He takes areas that are STEEPED in complex language and hundreds of dollars of courses/practitioners and actually makes them simple for just 10 bucks. This fine tunes design giving it it's subtleties the message originally intended to have. The bhan tugh site also gives nutrition information which Steve goes into detail in this book. Experimenting with nutrition over the last week has helped me to realize how much food has had an impact on my being, something that all human design students should learn but almost never hear about. Theres something truly fundamental about that part of it alone. All my life i knew i had a unique relationship to food but just couldnt put my finger on it exactly. Going from diet this or that, from this miracle food to the next, feeling miserable and agitated looking to get rid of my sensitive state of health and the decisions from my weakened/irritable states of being. Food may be the biggest homogenizer we experience in our lives. There's also a whole section on cognition that never gets touched in general design education which is surprisingly revealing and foretelling...what it means to be a species in transition. Some of us more human, some more rave, everybody a mix of the two. You get all of that and theres a few hundred more pages of usable material to keep coming back to that expands general design knowledge in both practicality AND outlook. Taking it back a notch, the way most people manipulate each other in this world IS actually barbaric (by design of course), and then comes human design which is by comparison advanced and can give some relief, but even design can become crude (even damaging depending on cognition) in it's goal to simplify everything down to just a few words and becoming too rigid. Something that is surprisingly helpful is the feeling I get in Steve's writing that through these species sized transitions in time nothing needed to be taught in the first place. All this education is a privilege. The species would have transitioned anyway. So yes, we can use design as a sort of course correction system but it is still just a smaller part of a much greater flow of things. As Steve says, Bhan Tugh isn't just something to "do", its a message. I dont want to come off like I'm not a fan of design though, this knowledge gives so much information it's beautiful. Steve finishes with an excerpt on death reminding us we are the experience of witnessing evolution from this unique vantage....once it's over, that's it. Then a whole new vantage may be created. We have the privilege to live a life that was designed for the passenger OR to live one running deep in the not self. This makes up the illusion of differentness and in truth we are actually the thing we cant quite pin down rather than these disposable bodies. But equipped with this knowledge THAT is what gives us our freedom. So in conclusion, for just the information on cognition, nutrition, and our species transition this book easily gets 5 stars from me.

About the Author

Phaswane Mpe taught African literature and publishing studies at the University of Witwatersrand. Welcome to Our Hillbrow was his only published novel. He died in 2004.

South Africa After the Aparthied

It's an interesting book if one wants to examine the lives of Black South Africans living in a big city after the apartheid. Most of the the people in these neighborhoods have moved from countryside and live in a separate world from White South Africans. The unique thing about this book is that it doesn't deal with White vs Black issues, but its main focus is the attitude and prejudices of Black South Africans toward other Black South Africans and immigrants from other African countries. Interestingly, the rural people feel like Blacks in a city like Johannesburg are dirty, with low morals, and no good can come from associating with them. Their views on Immigrant African are even worse. The epidemic of AIDS is understood in the light of these views--it is believed that it was brought by Black African immigrants from countries like Nigeria.

One Word: Amazing

I was assigned this book for a class on globalization, and I was not very excited to read it. However I was pleasantly surprised to find myself not just able to get through it, but actually enjoying it.
Phaswane Mpe is a phenomenal writer, who developed deep, complex characters and truly embodied the state of mind that is xenophobia. The story he created will capture you and your
curiosity of the unknown; and if you do know a lot about Africa and xenophobia, it will still pull you in with its relatability and a fantastic storyline.
This book is thought provoking, engaging, sad, and at times, amusing.

Mpe's novel is a sobering look at the intersections of social, political, cultural, and racial divides that characterize transitional South Africa. Setting himself apart from his predecessors, Mpe uses a palimpsestic narrative to critique his South African context and realities.
