I think that this book is only a textbook and handy source in the world regarding principles of limit state design methodologies for steel plated structures with the focus on ULS (ultimate limit states). This book provides an elaborate description for theoretical background and derivations of ULS design formulations and methods which are supposed to be the most advanced and sophisticated. While some softwares developed by the authors can be downloaded from the internet web site, the readers themselves can of course easily develop their own programs based on the methods and design formulae presented in the textbook.

Karen Bonsignore, MA, RT is an associate professor in the Department of Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging at New York City College of Technology and is currently the project director of�the Career ePortfolio web design project. She is certified in advanced imaging modalities, including mammography, quality management, and magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography. She has given numerous presentations on various radiology topics, most extensively ammography and breast imaging.

Myke Kudlas, MEd, RT is the director of the Mayo Clinic Radiography Program in Jacksonville, Florida, and assistant professor of Radiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He has written and presented xtensively in the areas of radiography and education, and is an active member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences, and the Jacksonville Society of Radiologic Technologists. He is a former item writer for the Developmental Testing Program of the College of St. Catherine and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Dana Maiellaro, MEd, RT is an instructor in the Radiologic Technology Program at Nassau Community College. She also has an advanced certification in mammography. She has been program director of the Robert J. Hochstim School of Radiography at South Nassau Communities Hospital in New York and an assistant professor in the Department of Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging at New York City College of Technology. Her area of expertise is radiographic positioning and procedures, which she obtained working as both a diagnostic radiographer and CT technologist at several Level 1 trauma centers.

Abraham Thengampallil, MD�is the former�associate director of Medical Curriculum for Kaplan Medical. He received his MD at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn (SUNY Downstate Medical Center) and did residency training in Pediatrics at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Thengampallil currently works as a medical director for a medical education/strategic communications agency in New York.

Stinsey S. Thengampallil, RT has worked as a radiologic technologist in New York for more than 7 years. Her areas of clinical interest include mammography, bone densitometry, and diagnostic radiography. She received her Associate degree in Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging from New York City College of Technology. She is a New York state–licensed radiologic technologist certified in diagnostic radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). She is an active member of numerous professional organizations.

Straightforward

For what it is, this book is well written and very readable. It does an excellent job of condensing economic growth theory into an understandable textbook. However, it is missing a lot of nuance (and no endogenous growth theory!?). For a more complete perspective on development and growth economics, I'd recommend taking a look at a nuber of outside resources, such as "Poor Economics".

Excellent, not-too-technical overview of economic growth

I read this book to get an overview of the topic (rather than as part of a course), and thought it was excellent.

If you are looking for a modern overview of economic growth, then perhaps the most important feature to consider is the technical level of the book. Weil's book is in the middle when it comes to the technical level, and is appropriate for people who already know at least a little bit of economics (e.g. supply & demand) and are comfortable with basic algebra (but not necessarily calculus, which only ever shows up in a handful of Weil's footnotes).

For those who want the least technical books, there are popular titles like "The Next Convergence" (by Spence) and "Why Nations Fail" (by Acemoglu & Robinson). These are written for a general audience and will involve no math and relatively few charts or graphs. They're easier to read than the more technical books listed below, but they also give a less complete picture of the field.

For those who want the most technical books, there are PhD-oriented texts like "Introduction to Modern Economic Growth" (also by Acemoglu) or "The Economics of Growth" (by Aghion & Howitt). These books have lots and lots of math and are well suited to people who want to be able to read or write growth papers on the research frontier, but you probably want to keep away from them unless you've already got a bit of experience working through calculus-laden econ texts.

Weil's book lies between these extremes, and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants some detail about the most important topics in economic growth without getting too bogged down. So what are these topics? Weil covers: capital accumulation, demographics, education, productivity, technology, efficiency, trade, government, inequality, culture, geography and natural resources, with at least a chapter for each (17 chapters total). Every chapter is full of good data, simple models, and clear explanations. It's exactly what a good undergraduate economics text should be, and it's probably the text I would use if I taught an undergraduate course in economic growth.
