• Explains how to remove the emotional blocks and scars at the root of many common physical ailments, such as eczema, ulcers, and weight gain

• Provides guidance on treating others, including babies and children, and daily treatment routines to combat stress and create emotional and energetic balance

Does emotion rule you or do you rule your emotions? With five point touch therapy, you can quickly counter negative emotional states as they arise, leaving you better able to cope with a crisis, as well as treat long-term issues such as depression and anxiety. More than just a self-help method, this technique, also called psycho-bio-acupressure (PBA), is also effective for children and babies, particularly for sleep problems and colic.

Based on Dr. Delatte’s 20 years of research and decades of hands-on practice, PBA works by sequential activation of 5 acupressure points to produce an energetic circuit in the body. This circuit can provide immediate relief from acute negative emotions and, when applied regularly, prevent future emotional overreactions and treat deep-seated destructive emotional states. The book includes 22 five-point sequences for specific emotional issues, such as panic attacks or suppressed anger, and for removing the emotional blocks and scars at the root of many common physical ailments, such as eczema, asthma, and weight gain. Dr. Delatte explains how to combine the 22 sequences to treat more than 70 additional emotional and physical ailments as well as how to use this technique with homeopathy and Bach Flower Therapy for more stubborn conditions. Providing a daily routine of self-treatment to combat stress and balance your energetic centers, this book allows you to take control of your emotions as well as protect and enhance your health.

Review
“Pierre-Nol Delatte, M.D., is offering a therapy that can make swimming against an emotional current more like floating atop a pool of water, embracing the body’s energy, unlocking restrictions, and providing a balanced conduit for healing. Five Point Touch Therapy is well organized, easy to follow, easy to use, and offers an instrument in your toolbox for releasing energy blocks that threaten feelings of well-being.” (Celeste Cooper, R.N., coauthor of Integrative Therapies for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,)

“Pierre-Nol Delatte, M.D., has provided brilliant insight for those eager to explore self-healing through his five point acupressure therapy. He clearly demonstrates and explains how, given the right conditions, acupressure therapy can naturally boost immunity, biologically produce its own medicine, and heal the body.” (Kam Thye Chow, founder of Lotus Palm School and author of Advanced Thai Yoga Massage)

“Five Point Touch Therapy or Psycho-Bio-Acupressure(PBA) simplifies the application of acupressure for everyone, not only for the practitioner...it is well written/translated and the diagrams are very helpful.” (Phylameana lila Desy, About.com, May 2013)

“As someone who has not only done hands-on energy healing but who has also taught it for almost forty years, I found this to be an amazing, easy-to-learn system which produces both immediate and long-term results. Let your customers know that it’s better than a weekend at the spa!” (Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insight, June 2013)

Chapter 3
The Ten Most Commonly Used Five-Point PBA Circuits

Stimulating the psycho-bio-acupressure circuits rebalances our energy, allowing for self-treatment of a variety of emotional issues. Each circuit consists of five points, which, with the assistance of the following illustrations, we will learn how to locate on our body.

To stimulate the circuit, apply firm pressure to each of the five points, then, without pausing, apply pressure to each point a second and third time. The pressure should be firm but not painful. The objective is a simultaneous stimulation of the points, so we want the tissues to keep the memory of the pressure. In other words, even after you have stopped pressing on the five points, you (or the person you are treating) should feel the pressure lingering for a few moments. This is crucial: the pressure must be firm enough for the tissues to keep the memory of it. This is how a “printed circuit” is produced, allowing us to activate the desired energies.

Tips for Stimulating the Circuits

- If there’s one acupressure point that you have stopped feeling after you have finished stimulating the circuit, don’t hesitate to reapply pressure to it; you may want to apply pressure a little longer this time.

- Despite the accuracy of the sketches, you may not feel very confident when you begin. Don’t hesitate to feel around for the correct point; the points vary slightly from person to person. Place your thumb or index finger on the spot depicted in the illustration. (Your other fingers are not strong enough to stimulate the points.) While keeping your finger on the spot, apply deeper pressure a bit to the right and then a bit to the left, slightly above and then slightly below. Explore the area until you hit a sensitive zone: this is the point you want. When you have located the correct point, maintain firm, steady pressure for about five seconds.

- If you don’t find the sensitive zone, don’t worry--sensitivity varies from person to person. You can’t go too far wrong; the surface of your finger largely covers the area you want to target.

For readers who are familiar with acupuncture or shiatsu, each point will be given its identification number as indicated in the standard referencing system used by professionals.

Before you begin, remove your watch and any magnetic jewelry and empty your pockets of mobile phones, remotes, and the like, as these objects can interfere with the action of PBA.

Circuit Number 2
Against Negativity and Doubt

Negativity is easy to recognize: it is a state of mind where everything is perceived and experienced as negative and gloomy. Being affected by negativity does not mean being truly depressed, though negativity may well be a sign of depression if it lasts for too long.

Basically, being negative means invariably and exclusively seeing the negative side of events and people; it means feeling antagonized and criticized all the time as well as exasperated by everything around you; it means seeing the empty half of the glass in all things; and it means feeling separated from the rest of the world, which is experienced as hostile.

Systematic doubt is part of negativity: you start your day feeling that nothing is going to work, you have stopped believing in anything, and you have the impression that you are just wasting your time. You are unable to visualize a horizon that could be free from the feeling of separation and loss. You begin to distrust your usual ethical values and the system you used to believe in. If we let doubt invade all aspects of our life, we are obviously in a negative state of mind and possibly on our way to depression.

This circuit is extremely important, as it will be found in practically every protocol we’ll be studying a bit later (these protocols help us manage all the destructive emotions that weaken and destabilize us).

First Point: SP6 L (Left)
On the inside of the left ankle, locate the protuberance (the medial malleolus); proceed along the side of the tibia for about 5 centimeters, then press firmly on the posterior border of the bone; this point is often sensitive.

If you are working on yourself, place the little finger of your right hand exactly on the internal malleolus of your left ankle: the point will be situated just under your index finger. Make sure you press on the posterior border of the tibia and not upon its anterior border.

If you are working on someone else, place yourself on the left side of the patient and put the little finger of your left hand on his malleolus; the point will be right under your index finger.

Second Point: LI4 R (Right)
The second point is located between the first and second metacarpals, on the radial aspect of the middle of the second metacarpal bone, at the highest spot of the muscle when the thumb and index fingers are brought close together. Separate your thumb from your index finger and exert pressure right in the middle.

Third Point
(Special Point on the Right Foot)
This point is located between the extensor tendons of the third and fourth toes, about 2 centimeters from their base.

Fourth Point: LU7 L (Left)
This point is located 3 centimeters from the most distal skin crease of the wrist, proximal to the styloid of the radius in a depression between the tendons of brachioradialis and abductor pollicis longus. It is located a little above the left wrist crease in the spot where you feel your pulse.

Fifth Point: GV23
This point is located in the depression that corresponds to what remains of the anterior fontanel you had as a baby. Start at the hairline and make sure you follow the axis of the cranium; as soon as you feel the little depression, you know you are there. Look in a mirror to make sure you follow the sagittal line of your head.

Great energy restoration
By E. Faber
Dr. Delatte has found a way to restore disturbed energy in just a few minutes each day. That energy work, combined with his golden rules is enough to keep stress and physical pain to a minimum. The book was interesting to read with all of the case studies and practical information. Also the explanation of doing the 5 point therapy is easy to follow. I've been doing circuits everyday and it really does make a difference in how my day goes! He spent 20 years learning and perfecting the method and it seems he has found a great way for people to help themselves and to ultimately to lessen their physical pain. I would definitely recommend this book!

This is basically a book of sequences, to do acupressure, for specific purposes. They worked for me. That's really all I care about, that I got results.

Gripping, raw, and beautiful, this book reveals the struggles and rewards of caring for a child with severe disability and helps professionals work more sensitively and effectively with families of children with special needs. Written with grace and candor by special education professional Beth Harry, the book chronicles the life of her daughter, Melanie, who was born with a rare form of cerebral palsy and died less than 6 years later.

Captivating the reader from page one, Dr. Harry illuminates the full spectrum of her parenting experiences—from the day her "little bird" came into the world to the day she left. Readers will come away with a deep understanding of

  • the complex emotions that parents experience as they adjust to life with a child who has special needs
  • the practical and emotional aspects of supporting a child with feeding difficulties, vision impairment, and limited motor skills
  • the joy parents experience when their child begins to communicate and make personal connections
  • the lasting impact a professional's words can have on a parent, and the need to provide positive support that allows a child to reach her full potential
  • the services, therapies, and interventions that improved Melanie's quality of life-and how they've changed since her story began in the 1970s

Ideal for use as a supplemental text in courses for preservice early interventionists, early childhood special educators, special educators, and health professionals, this book gives readers an unforgettable inside look at what families experience when their child has a disability—and how to meet their needs as their child grows. And, a Reader's Guide is included! Perfect for use in the classroom or in book clubs, the thought-provoking discussion questions help professionals absorb the book's lessons and apply them to everyday practice with families.

Eye-opening and inspiring, Melanie, Bird with a Broken Wing will leave a lasting impression and will, as Dr. Harry urges, prepare readers "to believe the messages of their hearts as they make professional decisions."

The Forest or the Trees?

"Gross global brain damage with severe mental retardation." What more was there to say? "Gross global brain damage with severe mental retardation." The summary words of Dr. Wilmington's diagnosis rang through my ears like a death knell for Melanie. I was devastated and disbelieving. They could not be right, for her intelligence communicated itself to me at every turn. They could not be right because she had learned too quickly all the things I had tried to teach her. They could not be right because her eyes told me they were wrong. They could not, please God, be right because if they were, she would live a life so limited as to be almost useless. They could not be right because she was my child!
How does a mother tread the fine line between what she sees and what she wants to see in her child? Where are the strengths and where are the weaknesses of the objective view of the outsider, as compared with the subjective view of the mother?
I believe that the mother's advantage is that of intimacy, which allows her a depth of perception unavailable to an outsider. I knew, for example, that Melanie's difficulty in focusing her eyes often made her appear to be turning away from people when she was in fact trying to look at them. With the advantage of intimacy, I knew also that the little squeal that others might interpret as a cry was Melanie's version of a laugh. I knew that flared nostrils followed by a little yawn meant that she was emptying her bladder.
But the mother's intimacy may also be a disadvantage. That intimacy made it impossible for me to see Melanie for the first time— to see her in her totality as a functioning individual who exists in the present and who compares in any given way to other individuals.
Such intimate knowledge of my child, and in this I am no different from other mothers, made it difficult for me to see her objectively at any point in time. How easy it is for a stranger to say of a child, "This child is spoilt and throws tantrums," "This child is cooperative," "This child is bright," "This child is retarded." Easy because a stranger meets the child on a given occasion and forms an overall impression—an impression that may be valid but is one dimensional.
The mother, knowing every stage that has contributed to the present entity, sees at once the present, past, and hopeful future and, in genuine confusion, replies, "Ah! Do you think so? Well, but, you see . . . ." Like the seasoned hunter, she cannot see the forest for the trees; she knows by touch each contour of the land but has no aerial view.
To me, it did not matter that from an aerial view the parts of Melanie's personal jigsaw puzzle did not integrate to form an impressive overall picture. What I knew was each part, by detail of color, shape, and texture. What the objective observers seemed to be looking for was the overall impression—the gestalt presented by Melanie's ill-fitting and poorly coordinated parts.
They observed, for example, that her comprehension of language appeared to be way ahead of all other areas of her development. Indeed, they made a point of commenting on this incongruity between her receptive language and her overall functioning. But they simply could not accept that such a mismatch could be true and attributed her comprehension to intensive repetitive drill on my part and consequent rote learning by Melanie. By rote learning, they meant learning that can only be applied within the narrow limits in which the lesson took place. In rote learning, there is no ability to transfer knowledge or apply it in new situations because it is learning that is mechanical rather than creative in nature, and is largely limited to the context in which it was first acquired. According to this view, Melanie's comprehension of language was, in the psychologist's words, a not very meaningful "splinter development."
What effect did this devastating judgment by these professionals have upon me and my view of Melanie?
I wish I could say that their words were only barely influential, that I knew I could retain my own opinion in spite of theirs. But I cannot. In spite of my own experience and observations, I was vastly influenced and depressed by these pronouncements. I think, in the long run, after my initial shock and astonishment, I gradually worked my way to a feeling something like this: I was not convinced that they were right that Melanie had so little potential for intellectual development. But I decided to face the fact that obviously she functioned as someone with severe disabilities regardless of what potential she might possess; and after all, how can one consider or describe potential in isolation from a person's performance? The fact was she performed at the level of a person with severe developmental disabilities.
But the corollary to this of course would be, what then? Should I alter my expectations and thus, probably, my efforts and objectives to be more in tune with this terrible diagnosis? I believe that I could not help altering my expectations to some extent. I pride myself on being a realist who manages to cope reasonably well with crises because I take care to prepare myself by accepting whatever appears to be factual. I think I have considerable faith in my own judgment under normal circumstances, but I also have great respect for experience and training. It would have been very difficult for me to maintain my optimism without some encouragement from professional quarters.
Fortunately, I did receive some encouragement. Sarah, Melanie's most admiring therapist, was convinced that her colleagues were wrong. She insisted, with no reservations, that Melanie behaved like an intelligent child severely affected by athetoid cerebral palsy, affecting all her muscular coordination including facial expression and speech. She lectured me severely on allowing myself to be influenced in my approach and insisted that I must aim as high as possible for Melanie and at all times expect comprehension. She reminded me of Dr. Karen Pape's explanation of how difficult it would be for whatever intelligence Melanie might have to break through the barriers of severe brain stem and cerebellar damage, and we regretted that Dr. Pape was away in England at that time.
Like Dr. Challenor and my friend Pat at Blythedale Hospital the year before, Sarah recommended Bobath physical therapy as the most important treatment for Melanie, an approach in which a child is repeatedly put through all the normal developmental patterns of movement in the correct sequence in an attempt to diminish the abnormal reflexes of the child with cerebral palsy and to teach the child to exercise conscious control over her muscles. I doubted very much that I would find such a therapist in Trinidad but was determined to continue practicing what principles I had already learned from the OCCC staff and from Sarah.
I have said that I was depressed and discouraged by the assessment that June. Yet I knew that I could never choose to do less than my best for Melanie. Her welfare and development had become the object of my life, and my own satisfaction and sense of personal well-being were now inextricably bound to hers. If I could work successfully with her, accepting her limitations but providing every possible opportunity for her development, then I would be successful in my own eyes and could live happily with myself and with her.

It is also an essential book for parents and families who are struggling with or who have a loved one struggling with parenting
By Anne
in this book, Dr. Harry illustrates, in example upon example, a parent's dark, intense grief and fear for her severely disabled daughter, Melanie, and the parent's triumph in not only learning how to care for Melanie but also figuring out how to get Melanie educated, learning and growing so that the child could reach her potential. It is difficult for people who do not know the anguish to understand the feelings and perspectives of parents who have children with special needs. This book lays out the realities of parenting such a child and, in so doing, helps the reader grow in understanding and compassion. This book improves hearts and opens minds.

"Melanie," in my opinion, should be on every book list for special educators -- in colleges and universities that train special education teachers, for school district training, and on book lists for administrators who oversee special education programs. It is also an essential book for parents and families who are struggling with or who have a loved one struggling with parenting a child with a disability.

Diane Arbus: Revelations, by Diane Arbus

Diane Arbus redefined the concerns and the range of the art she practiced. Her bold subject matter and photographic approach have established her preeminence in the world of the visual arts. Her gift for rendering strange those things we consider most familiar, and uncovering the familiar within the exotic, enlarges our understanding of ourselves.

Diane Arbus Revelations affords the first opportunity to explore the origins, scope, and aspirations of what is a wholly original force in photography. Arbus’s frank treatment of her subjects and her faith in the intrinsic power of the medium have produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Presenting many of her lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs in the context of the iconic images reveals a subtle yet persistent view of the world.

The book reproduces two hundred full-page duotones of Diane Arbus photographs spanning her entire career, many of them never before seen. It also includes an essay, “The Question of Belief,” by Sandra S. Phillips, senior curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and “In the Darkroom,” a discussion of Arbus’s printing techniques by Neil Selkirk, the only person authorized to print her photographs since her death. A 104-page Chronology by Elisabeth Sussman, guest curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art show, and Doon Arbus, the artist’s eldest daughter, illustrated by more than three hundred additional images and composed mainly of previously unpublished excerpts from the artist’s letters, notebooks, and other writings, amounts to a kind of autobiography. An Afterword by Doon Arbus precedes biographical entries on the photographer’s friends and colleagues by Jeff L. Rosenheim, associate curator of photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. These texts help illuminate the meaning of Diane Arbus’s controversial and astonishing vision.

Amazon.com Review
Muscle men, midgets, socialites, circus performers and asylum inmates: in the 1950s and '60s, photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) cast her strong eye on them all, capturing them as no one else could. Her documentary-style photos of society's margin-walkers were objective and reverential, while she often portrayed so-called normal people looking far more freakish than the freaks. Her powerful work was well-received in its day. Arbus received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1963 and 1966 and was included in a major show at MOMA in 1967. But her work entered the realm of near-myth after her 1971 suicide.

Posthumously cast as everything from patron saint of the underdog to a crass exploiter of the mentally challenged, Arbus has curiously never had a large retrospective until the show Revelations was organized by Arbus' family and SF MOMA. The accompanying catalogue is an oversized, sumptuous, beautifully printed tome. It includes all of the artist's iconic photographs as well as many that have never been publicly exhibited, including many pages of contact sheets, journal entries, and family snapshots. This work is so strong, it's mind-blowing. The giant in his apartment with his parents looks absolutely regal, his parents sad and confused. Are those crazy people always so happy? And what to make of this moment of extreme tenderness between a dominatrix and her client? This is a book worth hours of your time. --Mike McGonigal

About the Author
I want to photograph the considerable ceremonies of our present because we tend while living here and now to perceive only what is random and barren and formless about it. While we regret that the present is not like the past and despair of its ever becoming the future, its innumerable inscrutable habits lie in wait for their meaning...These are our symptoms and our monuments. I want simply to save them, for what is ceremonious and curious and commonplace will be legendary.

Diane Arbus–born Diane Nemerov in New York City in 1923–first began taking pictures in the early 1940s following her marriage to Allan Arbus. She studied photography with Berenice Abbott, Alexey Brodovitch, and Lisette Model. Her first published photographs appeared in Esquire in 1960. Over the next ten years her work continued to appear in Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar, and other magazines.

In 1963 and 1966 she was awarded John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships. She was one of three photographers whose work was the focus of New Documents, a 1967 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art. In 1970 Arbus made a portfolio of prints entitled A box of ten photographs, which was to be the first of a series of similar limited editions of her work. She taught photography in the late sixties at Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cooper Union, and, in 1971, gave a private master class at the artists’ cooperative where she lived.

A year after her death in 1971, her work was selected for inclusion at the Venice Biennale–the first work of an American photographer to be so honored. The Museum of Modern Art hosted a major retrospective that traveled throughout the United States and Canada from 1972 to 1975. The three books of her work, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), Diane Arbus: Magazine Work (1984), and Untitled: Diane Arbus (1995), were published posthumously and have remained continuously in print. Diane Arbus Revelations, in conjunction with the first major international retrospective of her work in thirty years, is the only comprehensive and intimate study of this singularly daring photographic artist.

Revealing, revelatory
By Ian Muldoon
I own two Arbus monographs and have lived with them for over 20 years. Many of those works are reproduced in this volume. There is a lot of talk about "the human condition" and I suppose all artists in one way or another wrestle with the notion. Arbus has always meant to me someone who seemed to reveal who we are beneath the fashion, the roles, the sex, the culture. I used one of her images as a means to illuminate a poster for a Sam Shepard play called Icarus' Mother - it was of a very young New York boy holding a toy hand grenade in a threatening way during play in Central Park - once seen never forgotten.
Nor will I forget her self portrait, naked pregnant, in this latest volume. So much. So much. This is the volume Arbus lovers have been waiting for. Printed in Germany, beautifully bound, positively packed with images, diary entries, extracts from letters, comment. A bargain.

Warning! For hard-core Arbus fans only
By Richard Drdul
I enjoy Diane Arbus' photos, but this book is too much for me. Her photos are only a small part of the book -- the majority of the book is a catalogue of her life. The contact sheets are quite interesting, as they reveal a lot about how she approached a subject. The rest will likely appeal only to hardcore Arbus fans.

A Must Read!
By M. Warren
This is a must read for any director regardless of your experience. In addition to musical concepts, the author suggests practical implications. It reaffirms some of the doubts about my teaching methodology and has given me fresh ideas! Thanks!

The Library of Greek Mythology (Oxford World's Classics), by Apollodorus

The only work of its kind to survive from classical antiquity, the Library of Apollodorus is a unique guide to Greek mythology, from the origins of the universe to the Trojan War.

Apollodorus' Library has been used as a source book by classicists from the time of its compilation in the 1st-2nd century BC to the present, influencing writers from antiquity to Robert Graves. It provides a complete history of Greek myth, telling the story of each of the great families of heroic mythology, and the various adventures associated with the main heroes and heroines, from Jason and Perseus to Heracles and Helen of Troy. As a primary source for Greek myth, as a reference work, and as an indication of how the Greeks themselves viewed their mythical traditions, the Library is indispensable to anyone who has an interest in classical mythology.

Robin Hard's accessible and fluent translation is supplemented by comprehensive notes, a map and full genealogical tables. The introduction gives a detailed account of the Library's sources and situates it within the fascinating narrative traditions of Greek mythology.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Ian Myles Slater on: A Library of Gods and Mortals
By Ian M. Slater
Robin Hard's version of "The Library of Greek Mythology" is one of several modern English translations of an ancient (date disputed) compilation (*bibliotheke* - hence "library) of summaries of stories of the gods and heroes of Greece (but not Rome). It seems to be based, wherever it can be checked, on excellent sources; or, possibly, on earlier compilations which had excellent sources. It was not intended for pleasure reading, but for use as a reference manual, although we have evidence that in Byzantine times some readers used it as a short "history" of mythological times.

If the name of the author is correct, he cannot be the "Apollodorus the Grammarian" to whom the work used to be attributed. Unfortunately, this is the only name we have for it. Given the lack of internal fraudulent claims, however the bare name seems to me better than "Pseudo-Apollodorus," as it is sometimes given, since "pseudo-" is likely to be taken as a reflection on the author, instead of early scholars.

Considering the huge amount of ancient Greek literature that has been lost, and the primary sources to which this compiler (whoever and whenever he was), seems to have had access it is even more regrettable that a portion of "The Library" survives only in an abridged form. (Fortunately, part of the re-summarized material is Homeric; unfortunately, some of it is not.)

Hard's translation is a clear presentation of the material, with an excellent introduction and helpful notes, as one would expect from the Oxford World's Classics series in recent years. It can be read alone, consulted, or, I think, used as a class text (not in my personal experience, however.) It is not the only translation available.

The "classic" translation (which stood alone for half a century) is that by Sir James Frazer (of "The Golden Bough") in 1921, in two volumes of the Loeb Classical Library (and so facing a Greek text). His commentary to "The Library" is, as one might expect, packed with information from other ancient sources and later parallels. Unfortunately, Frazer's commentary is not very well organized. His translation - to my taste - adds a certain Victorian ponderousness to the spare, and sometimes awkward original. (The use of Latin names for the deities and heroes may puzzle the novice, and annoy those of us who grew up on Greek names for Greeks.) This version is still in print, and is available online at the Perseus site (for classical literature, etc.), and PDFs of the two volumes can be found at the Library of Congress site (archive.org).

1975 and 1976 saw the appearance of two new translations, by Keith Aldrich and Michael Simpson, respectively. The Aldrich translation, as "The Library of Greek Mythology," is out of print; Amazon seems to offer current printings, but these turn out on inspection to be the later translation by Robin Hard.

Simpson's "Gods and Heroes of the Greeks: The Library of Apollodorus," is still in print. It is a richly annotated on ancient and modern literary versions of the story. Simpson has been criticized for unspecified inaccuracies in his treatment of the Greek. The most recent translaters, Smith and Trzaskoma (see below) prefer Hard's translation. However, Simpson's translation is clear, and his annotations, on the whole, well organized, if sometimes losing track of Apollodorus' text. Some readers seem to have found the language too American for their taste. It should be remembered that the author, whoever he was, used a kind of "international literary Greek," which probably seemed fairly up-to-date (if not very elegant) to his well-educated readers. Whether academic American English is a good substitute is certainly arguable.

Simpson's commentary appears as end-notes to sections of the main text, which makes for frequent interruptions, and the index is a bit sketchy, although usually helpful. I have used this edition for a quarter century with considerable enjoyment, and frequent enlightenment about other ancient works, and modern ones.

Aldrich's translation does not discuss other ancient versions in any detail, or refer to modern literary versions. I found it quite readable, but as of a decade ago I much preferred Simpson's version -- possibly a consequence of owning a paperback copy, instead of consulting it in a library. (Both Aldrich's and Simpson's versions are also illustrated.)

The more recent (1997) translation by Robin Hard, in the Oxford World's Classics series, as "The Library of Greek Mythology," has textual notes and critical apparatus, aimed at fellow classicists, but comforting to some of the rest of us. Hard's introduction and commentary offer clearer exposition of the structure of the "The Library" (stories arranged regionally, and genealogically in each section -- the latter device going back to the Hesiodic "Catalogue" poems, centuries earlier). It also has a superb index (several, in fact), and is fairly good on ancient variants, but avoids treatment of modern versions of the old stories, which is Simpson's strength. (Hard is one who does not approve of Simpson's translation.)

This translation is, like Simpson's, in print, and it also is now available in Kindle. I found the digital edition to be well-designed and well-executed, when I read it this spring on a smartphone screen, which I consider the ultimate test. (Toggling back and forth between text and notes took some time to get used to, but that was my problem!)

A more recent translation, aimed largely at students, is "Apollodorus' 'Library' and Hyginus' 'Fabulae'" translated, with Introductions, by R. Scott Smith and Stephen M. Trzaskoma (Hackett 2007), also available in both paperback and Kindle formats. It contains complete, and substantially revised, versions of material which had appeared in excerpts in the same publisher's 2004 "Anthology of Classical Myth."

[Addendum, March 2016: A truncated version of Frazer's 1921 two-volume translation-with-commentary has been published as a Kindle book, "The Library of Apollodorus," by Delphi Classics, as Delphi Ancient Classics Book 62. I have reviewed it, concentrating on what is lacking, and how it can be supplemented with on-line resources (mainly pdfs).]

Amazing
By Gerion
What you would expect. Dry at times, but riveting at others. The differences from other classics are interesting. The recounting of Homer is fascinating. Other retellings ring hollow and it makes you wish more of the classics survived.

Good for a reference
By Claude Avary
The World's Classics sereies has presented a fine new translation of the Mythology Library of "Apollodorus" (a name of convenience for an author we know nothing about). Translator and editor Hard cleanly presents the writer's exhaustive compilation of Greek mythology, and through careful division and labelling of the sections, reveals some of the author's meticulous categorization. For hard-core mythology nuts, this is an indispensible reference: the Greek myths straight from a collector of antiquity, and our only glimpse at some important lost works. But a word of warning to the layman: Apollodorus is possible the most dull writer of the ancient world, and he make no attempts to create an entertaining or even readable work. It's all dry and dense -- nothing a translator can really do about that! If you're looking for a more entertaining ancient compliation of mythology, try Ovid's delightful METAMORPHOSES.
