Jennifer McGurk, RDN, CDN, CDE, CEDRD is the founder of Eat With Knowledge, located in Nyack, New York. She has several years of experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, and is a counselor for medical nutrition therapy. Jennifer specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and emotional eating. Her passion is to help people find peace and balance with food choices. Jennifer completed her undergraduate training at Penn State University, majoring in Nutritional Sciences. She then went on to complete her dietetic internship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She received her Certified Diabetes Educator credential in 2009 and her Certified Eating Disorders Registered Dietitian credential in 2014. Pursuing Private Practice: 10 Steps to Start Your Own Business is her first book. She is also the author of Pursuing Private Practice: 10 Steps to Grow Your Own Business. Get Ahead of the Pack!

If you're anything like me and prefer the movie trailer to the movie and the book review to the book, then Pursuing Private Practice is the guide for you. No boring character development or fluffy filler scenes - this book goes right to the point and leaves you with no excuses. There are other fantastic books, and you should read them, too, but get this first, get started, and get ahead of the pack!

Jennifer McGuirk's excellent step-by-step book does all that work for you

Twenty five years ago, I started my private practice out of compassion, creativity and a desire to help others. Those things I knew, but what I didn't know was how to run my own business. My business approach was mostly trial and error. I made mistakes along the way and put a lot of time and energy into figuring it all out. Jennifer McGuirk's excellent step-by-step book does all that work for you. It's clear, simple and motivating. If you're starting a new private practice or have been in practice for awhile, this book answers all of your questions even the ones you didn't know you had. I strongly recommend this book to all mental health practitioners in private practice. It's a gem!

This resource guide contains the nuts and bolts of how to launch your business, from business formation, setting goals, finding your first clients, and more. Imitating Shakespeare, Dryden excelled himself

I tell thee, eunuch, she has quite unmanned him.
Can any Roman see, and know him now,
Thus altered from the lord of half mankind,
Unbent, unsinewed, made a woman's toy,
Shrunk from the vast extent of all his honours,
And crampt within a corner of the world? O Antony!

Dryden recast Shakespeare's most sprawling play, Antony and Cleopatra, but with "the unities of time, place, and action, more exactly observed, than perhaps the English theatre requires." This is more than a mere neo-classical exercise, however. The concentration on the precise moment when Octavian wrested control of the Roman Empire from Antony intensifies the drama. Also, although this has sometimes been disputed, Dryden is a brilliant poet:

VENTIDIUS. What lethargy has crept into your soul?
ANTONY. 'Tis but a scorn of life, and just desire
To free myself from bondage.
VENTIDIUS. __ __ Do it bravely.
ANTONY. I will; but not by fighting. O Ventidius!
What should I fight for now?--my queen is dead.
I was but great for her; my power, my empire,
Were but my merchandise to buy her love;
And conquered kings, my factors. Now she's dead,
Let Caesar take the world,--
An empty circle, since the jewel's gone
Which made it worth my strife: ...

His preface is also a fine performance:

"... I have not copied my author servilely: [...] The occasion is fair, and the subject would be pleasant to handle the difference of styles betwixt him and Fletcher, and wherein, and how far they are both to be imitated. [...} by imitating him, I have excelled myself throughout the play; and particularly, that I prefer the scene betwixt Antony and Ventidius in the first act, to anything which I have written in this kind."

About the Author

Jane Krauss is a teacher, author and consultant who does curriculum and program development designed to increase participation of girls and other underrepresented groups in computer science. She will gladly tell you why computational thinking is the fundamental literacy of our technical age!

Jane also writes and offers professional development internationally around the topic of project-based learning with technology. With Suzie Boss, she is coauthor of Reinventing Project-Based Learning: Your Field Guide to Real World Projects in the Digital Age (2nd ed., 2014, ISTE) and Thinking Through Project-Based Learning: Guiding Deeper Inquiry (2013, Corwin).

In her free time, Jane enjoys dabbling in glasswork and mosaics, and keeps fit running and hiking on woodland trails just outside her door in Eugene, Oregon.

Suzie Boss is a writer and educational consultant who focuses on the power of teaching and learning to improve lives and transform communities. She is the author of several popular books for educators, including Bringing Innovation to School, Reinventing Project-Based Learning (co-authored with Jane Krauss), and Setting the Standard for Project Based Learning (co-authored with John Larmer and John Mergendoller). She is a regular contributor to Edutopia and the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and a member of the Buck Institute for Education National Faculty. She is collaborating with award-winning global educator Stephen Ritz on The Power of a Plant, which tells his inspiring story of creating green classrooms and healthier outcomes for children and communities across New York’s South Bronx and around the world.

Inspired by teachers who push the boundaries of the traditional classroom, Suzie consults with schools internationally that are ready to shift away from tests and textbooks and engage students in real-world problem solving. She has helped project-based learning take hold at schools in India, Europe, Mexico, and South America, as well as all over the United States. Beyond the regular school day, she has developed programs that teach youth and adults how to improve their communities with innovative, sustainable solutions.

Her wide-ranging interests in education were shaped by several years as a writer, editor, and field researcher for the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (now Education Northwest), and earlier experiences as a community college instructor and journalist. She lives in Portland, Oregon, where she enjoys exploring the outdoors, playing tennis, and spending time with her husband and two grown sons.

Innovative approach to learning

Co-authors Krauss and Boss are on the cutting edge of exploring new approaches to learning. Any book that demonstrates innovative and successful methods of teaching to counteract the often dreary techniques that are engrained in too many classrooms is a worthy read.

Major Milestone for Neural Science

I am a software designer, involved in mobile technology and sensors. Why would a designer be intrigued by a book about brain imaging techniques? The answer is that this book is much more than a description of state of the art of imaging brain function, it is a must read for anyone interested in cognition.

Noam Chomsky famously stated in 80`s that contemporary neural science was too primitive to provide any useful information for understanding of language processing. Today, leading computer vision scientists and AI scientists similarly see no need to study brain, Cartesian separation of body and mind leads them to believe that vision function as well as higher cognitive functions can be better implemented in silicon, unencumbered by carbon structures and motor actions of specifically human anatomy.

As it turns out, Freeman's evidence recorded with rudimentary 8x8 array of electrodes proves them wrong. It also proves futility of future efforts relying on symbolic, rule based digital information processing to create human like intentional behavior.

Chapters 1-5 of the book cover basic techniques of electroencephalography, such us short term FFT's, Gabor transform, Hilbert transform, Principal Component Analysis, progressing to wavelets and wavelet denoising in chapter 5.

Chapters 6-7 describe overwhelming obstacles to measuring various forms of energy produced by brain and introducing many ingenious methods to overcome them. These chapters also introduce difference between micro scale events generated by small neural circuits and macro scale events produced by large scale interaction of massive neuronal populations.

Chapters 8-11 are the heart of the book, opening with well known spatial images of AM waves recorded over the entire olfactory bulb of sniffing rabbit as well as demonstrating how these spatial patterns change in different contexts. The bulb sends its output through non-topographic lateral olfactory track to enthorhinal cortex where it gets transformed into a multi-sensory percept or gestalt and possibly a new memory in hippocampus. At this point AM patterns do not represent the stimulus, they represent user memory, retrieved by stimulus. Higher cognitive functions can only be explained by macroscopic patterns of continuous AM waves rather than discrete symbol processing.

Authors describe brain as a thermodynamic system, not an information processing system. They demonstrate that understanding cognition requires measurements at both macro and micro level of brain dynamics. While the two levels constrain each other, they can not form a linear casual chain. It is this lack of linear causality in cognition which makes information processing approach indefensible.

At the age of 85 professor Freeman delivers empirical evidence which completes triumphantly a long struggle against 350 year old but still dominant cartesian dualism of contemporary science, quest started by likes of Edelman, Winograd, Damasio, Lakoff, Merleau Ponty and many others. Thanks to work of professor Freeman that quest may be reaching its end.

Victor has written an exceptional work here!

Grandmaster Victor Mikhalevski is a well-respected expert on the opening who regularly writes the 1.e4 column for ChessPublishing and has now published a book through Quality Chess. The book has received excellent reviews from chess professionals, and it provides extensive and innovative coverage of a very old, very solid chess opening. Mikhalevski concludes that the Open Spanish is not sufficient for equality in the main lines, which is a very honest assessment for the author of a book for the second player.

However, he also concludes that the endgames are inside the drawing range, so if you want to be able to draw and still have plenty of winning chances should your opponent go wrong, this is a good opening choice for you. It is unreasonable to expect a Black opening to fight for the win without allowing White to do the same. The Open Spanish gives Black a chance to fight for the win if White takes the risks, but if both players play it safe a draw is the correct result.

There is extensive coverage of many novelties and the known literature is well-perused by GM Mikhalevski.

Overall I would highly recommend this book.

The Open (?) Spanish

I was disappointed in the book. The first six of the 19 chapters in the book covered lines other than the Open Spanish. Chapters 6 through 9 covered rare and seldom played lines. On the other hand, many of the main lines of the Open Spanish were not covered at all.

What's it like to be a bat or a bee? In one sense, we can never know; in another, we can find out by studying the extraordinary perceptual systems by which these and other animals process the world. Bats' sonar lets them discover their prey, their cave-mates and their caves in the pitch-dark. Dolphins use similar sonar systems to discover obstacles, food and one another in the nearly lightless ocean: they even alter their frequencies (like cell phone users) to avoid interference. And chemical communication systems regulate sex in moths, rats, pigs and, probably, people: pigs hunt truffles so well because the valuable fungus contains a pig sex hormone. Hughes, a professor of psychology at Dartmouth, describes not only how these sixth and seventh senses work, but how scientists found out about them. An Italian in the 1790s struck out the eyes of bats (who navigated just fine afterwards); a Swiss surgeon plugged their ears (they got lost). Despite these tests, zoologists until the 1930s believed that bats used not hearing, but some special sense of touch. Most dolphin sonar research, by contrast, requires some measure of dolphin cooperation. Hughes's forays into animal sensoria require that he explain concepts from acoustics, anatomy, neurology, physiology and animal behavior; he does so cleanly and well, though his style can get condescending or gee-whizzish. Can a dog sense in advance that its owner is about to have an epileptic seizure? A dog described in a recent news report does that, evidently by detecting certain chemicals associated with the onset of a seizure. It is an example of a sensory capability beyond the human range. Many animals can sense things that people are unaware of or sense weakly. Such animals are the subject of the story recounted by Hughes, who is a professor of psychology at Dartmouth College. He describes sonar in bats and dolphins, biological compasses (based on the sun or stars or geomagnetism) in birds and insects, electricity sensing in fish, and pheromones (chemical signals) in insects and apparently in people. And he takes pains to pin down the mechanism of the sensory capability in each case. "We don't yet have all the answers," he says, "but at least we are learning how to ask the right questions."

Fascinating read for everyone!

This book was assigned reading for a university-level animal behavior/neurobiology class. I tore through it in 3 weeks (which sounds like a lot, but in grad. school it is the blink of an eye!) The beginning of the first chapter is a little hard to take (it describes some rather horrific ways men used to test echolocation in bats back in the days when science ethics was still in its infancy) but the rest is a delightfully written look into how various animals use their unique senses (echolocation, electroreception, magnetic field detection ect). I was worried that it might be a bunch of technical jargon, and some parts are, but the author does a fantastic job of taking that jargon and explaining it in a way that most people should be able to understand. It is funny and informative... one of the few assigned readings that I have really loved and appreciated. I'd read it at the pizza parlor near campus and people would regularly stare at me as I guffawed, laughed my butt off, or blurted out "really" with a stunned, pleasantly surprised and a bit too loud voice. Anyone who has even a passing interest in animal behavior and the physics, physiology, and anatomy behind their "exotic" (read: mostly non-human) senses. It spans more than just biology and is written so well, that non-scientists would love it.

Really excellent and in depth

This is one of my favorite books on the senses. The author gives a great overview of senses that are beyond our usual understanding. If you want to know what it is like to be a bat (or a dolphin, or a shark), this can give you a real idea about the way their senses work; in the process, enriching our ideas about how our own, familiar senses work. There's also some great "history of science" here; it's not just facts about senses, but a history of thinking about them -- you may take for granted now that bats navigate by echolocation, but that was far from obvious a few hundred years ago.
