He has consulted with leading corporations nationwide and holds a Ph.D. in marketing from Columbia University. He lives in Commack, New York.

This book is my guide through life and work.

This book was suggested to me years ago by a very trusted colleague - in fact, I read whatever he suggests to me. I was an emotional, sometimes angry and wary person (though my "core behavior" is kind and cooperative). When I would come upon a work or personal situation that was challenging, I often felt that life was conspiring against me, that I was somehow deficient or viewed as lacking by others. This book helped me write a new storyline for my entire life, and while I'm not going to pretend that I'm always perfect, that I never feel uncertain or anxious, I no longer assess or react to difficult times or people in the same fashion. And I've gone back, time and again, to this gem of a book to refresh myself on Dr. Rao's great wisdom. I will never be without this book... and as of this writing, I have given it as a gift to no fewer than 10 of my friends. It is one that I recommend, over and over. It's timeless.

Practical mental exercises to improve your attitude and make you happier

I read the book's title as meaning "You're successful, are you ready for that?" rather than "Do you want to succeed?" emphasizing the word "ready". And just as reaching enlightenment does not obviate the need to perform the more mundane chores of life, being ready to succeed does not obviate earning a living or making friends. You can do both but if you're not ready to see your success, you won't realize that you are successful and you won't be as happy as you could be.

Rao only indirectly writes about increasing the material and social markers of success, i.e. how wealthy you are or how many friends you have. He stresses that we need to give less importance to these markers and to appreciate what we already have. (And when adversity strikes, we should appreciate that it wasn't worse.) Success breeds success but only if you nurture it properly and that's what he writes about.

Rao's techniques are simple and effective. He first gives examples of what he calls mental models, or predetermined thinking patterns. For example when you are preparing for meetings you always assume that people will argue with you, this predetermined pattern in which you think is a negative mental model. Rao wants us to become conscious of our mental models, especially the negative ones. Next he wants us to detach ourselves from them. He has us create an imaginary friend, who's actually not a friend but an unbiased observer. We're to imagine this friend to describe what we're saying or thinking.

Rao offers many more exercises, with the later exercises building on the earlier ones. The best thing about "Are you Ready to Succeed?" is that the exercises are practical and not too New Age-ish.

Great in real life...not so much in the digital version

We bought this after checking out the hardcover/board book from the library and my son loving it. It really loses something in the digital version, the screen keeps changing orientation. Not a fan. Not worth saving a couple dollars, buy the board book and love it - it's worth it.

Like the idea of renting

Son required it for an online class for his master's program. Like the idea of renting, but it was almost worthless to him as Amazon isn't authorized to give out Wiley codes in order to go online and do the assignments. Had to pay another $95 to get the code from Wiley. Not a good deal in the long run.

This is a very comprehensive textbook, however, I will not recommend it to readers that only has an interest in the subject. Some of the content is highly mathematical, and as such meant for serious students in this field. The book covers a very wide range of subjects in this field.

An Introduction is a serious-minded yet accessible text for readers of all backgrounds, about the origins and history of the mental discipline of philosophy, from the early Greek and classical Greek era to medieval times to the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Further chapters explore the core and peripheral subjects discussed by philosophy, twentieth-century philosophical movements, and well-known philosophical problems revolving about such fundamental issues as free will, time, truth, facts and values, personal identity, and more. A thoughtful, exhaustively researched, and well-grounded primer, What Is Philosophy? An Introduction lives up to its title - a more difficult task than one might first guess, considering the complexities of the subject. Highly recommended, especially for public and college libraries, and as a textbook for Philosophy 101 courses. "Nietzsche wrongly thought that when the authority of religion is overthrown, a nihilistic view is inevitable, namely, that the world is valueless, purposeless and amounts to nothing... Nietzsche failed to appreciate that truth is a process and not an end in itself. We are responsible for creating our own values and finding our own meaning in life. Religion is just one way of doing this and has become inadequate for our present purposes. Presumably, his theory of eternal recurrence prevented him from thinking of cultural change and improvement since, in his view, everything comes back to the same thing in the end."
