Beverly M. Kienzle is the John H. Morison Professor of the Practice in Latin and Romance Languages and lecturer on medieval Christianity at Harvard Divinity School. Her research and writing focus on the place of preaching and sermons in the history of medieval religion and on evidence for women's preaching in monastic, lay, and dissident communities. Kauffman, an independent Lincoln assassination scholar, offers a beautifully written, exhaustive and well-reasoned reassessment of John Wilkes Booth and the murder of America's 16th president. The story Kauffman tells, though highly familiar, is also byzantine enough to still capture our attention. More importantly, Kauffman puts a new spin on well-worn data, adding a riveting reinterpretation that paints Booth as a ruthless player of complex games: a darkly brilliant manipulator of people, not all of whom realized what they were a part of until after Lincoln lay dead. Booth reveled in creating false impressions and planting strategic misinformation. One example involves Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set Booth's fractured leg before learning of the assassination and then, frightened for his life, made the mistake of denying knowing the actor. Years later, Gen. In this thorough review of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Kauffman seems to have examined everything--documents, places, and artifacts--related to the case. He reports having spent 400 hours in the assassin's home, indicating his dedication to unearthing all the facts about the plots of John Wilkes Booth. Fortunately, dedication doesn't degenerate into obsession with any single angle: Kauffman announces no astounding revelation--such as a link between the assassin and the Confederate government. He does stress, however, the forensic sloppiness of the investigation, albeit without insinuating the wrong people were caught, tried, and hanged. While joining the historical chorus that innkeeper Mary Surratt, whatever her knowledge of the plotters, might not have deserved the rope, Kauffman's tracking of Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt doesn't clear them of consorting with Booth. Myths are exploded!

AMERICAN BRUTUS starts with the assassination of Lincoln. Kauffman quotes just about everybody who was at Ford's theater when it happened: audience members, stage hands, actors etc. Then he moves to the initial investigations and the several law enforcement officers and detectives who were on the trail of the killers. It's hard to keep everybody straight.

Not until Chapter Five do we get a glimpse of Booth's background. His father was also an actor and seemed to get along well with the "rented" slaves he kept. Junius Booth Sr. had no problem with negroes eating at the same table. Kauffman suggests that military school may have had something to do with Booth's attitude toward blacks.

Kauffman hypothesizes that Booth saw himself as a Brutus character. According to Booth, Lincoln was a tyrant, like Julius Caesar, who had trampled on the Constitution. In the picture section, we see John Wilkes acting with his brothers in Julius Caesar, although he played Mark Antony to Edwin's Brutus. Kauffman says John Wilkes played many such characters throughout his career.

There are several other illuminating hypotheses in AMERICAN BRUTUS. One would be that Booth tried to implicate anyone he talked to about the plot, plus several other innocent bystanders. He shows how Dr. Mudd was "set up" by Booth and Surratt. He also shows how Booth tried to do this with Vice President Johnson by leaving him a note prior to the assassination.

Kauffman also works hard at exploding several misconceptions about the assassination. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton is shown taking charge after Lincoln was shot. Far from hating Lincoln, he was genuinely fond of the president. Also, John Wilkes Booth did not break his leg when he jumped from Lincoln's box. Kauffman shows that this notion came from the journal Booth kept during his flight, which was packed with other deliberate fabrications. Most surprising for me, I guess, was Kauffman's portrayal of Lewis Thornton Powell. The myth has it that Powell was insane, but Kauffman shows that Powell's lawyer used an insanity defense during the trail, which may have given historians a wrong idea; Powell was a member of Mosby's Rangers prior to the assassination and faced death bravely.

The trial segment was kind of dull. Eight people were tried by a military tribunal, including a woman. The prosecution did not have to furnish all of the evidence it found to the various defense attorneys. Some of the testimony was faked. Yet, four of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment and were eventually pardoned by President Johnson as he left office.

For me, the Coda was the most interesting part of the book as the reader gets to find out what happened to all of the principals later on in life. Henry Rathbone, for instance, who accompanied Lincoln and his wife to the play, never fully recovered from his stabbing and eventually murdered his wife.

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of attending the John Wilkes Booth Escape Route tour sponsored by the Surratt Society (...). Mr. Kauffman was the tour guide and I enjoyed the tour greatly. So I looked forward to this book.

Mr. Kauffman has done what other historians have not: he went back to the eye-witness accounts taken on that night and the following days. In other words, he used information that has not been polluted by the exaggeration and imagination of the human memory. For example, immediate eye-witness accounts at Ford's Theater dispell the oft-quoted "fact" that that Booth broke his leg when he jumped from the balcony to the stage.

But this book does not address Booth's escape only. Mr. Kauffman includes additional information about the times. The contemporary reader will be interested in the parallels between 1860-1865 USA and the current status of the USA: a politically polarized nation, criminal profiling (a US Congressman was detained at a train station because he looked somewhat like Booth), sketchy homeland security (the bridges out of DC were like sieves allowing Booth and Herold to escape), a massive military search for the assassins, joyous celebrations in foreign countries and anti-American sentiment following an American tragedy, etc.

Mr. Kauffman's Booth is a consummate villian who carefully and thoughtfully plotted the Lincoln Assassination and who skillfully manipulated numerous people, thus entangling them into his web. His book gives the reader a good idea of the times and shows us that after 130 years, nothing much has really changed.

Wonderful book. Well researched. Well presented.

A nice overview

Spickard and Cragg give a fine historical overview to the history of Christians. They show when and where it deviated doctrinally as well as practically, and what were some of the cultural/social/political factors that influenced and impacted believers. For the most part, my opinion, is that they leave much of their personal bias out of interpretation of events--FOR THE MOST PART. Obviously, complete objectivity is a near impossible feat.

I do have one major caveat for readers of this book. The authors use the term "Christian" in its most broadest sense. In other words, if you claim the name--you are represented here. I am not talking about Catholic/Eastern Orthodoxy/Protestant differences and divides here. The authors use a broad brush to show how many heretical sects and cults emerged out of orthodox faith (e.g. Nestorians). In that respect, it is overly ecumecal for my convictions. Yet, the authors critique them where there doctrine strays. Just be warned.

Otherwise it is a fascinating read and very engaging.

Helpful but Out-of-Date Survey

As someone who teaches church history at a Protestant Seminary in Asia, I found this book extremely helpful as a broad survey of Christian history. The strength of the volume is highlighting how the theological debates filtered down into the everyday lives of believers, at many points, such as during the medieval church, some of the esoteric debates made little difference. Another strength is the author's ability to weave a more global picture of Christianity with helpful chapters that survey Christianity in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. As the Christian church becomes increasingly global it becomes important for Christians from these areas of the world to discover their Christian roots. This is true of some of my students from China who appreciate learning about the early Nestorians, or still yet later, Jesuit missionaries, that pre-dated the much more modern Protestant missions of the 19th-century. Altogether I would strongly recommend this volume as a helpful general survey, but the list of suggested readings is grossly out-of-date and I came up with a page of typos. I can only hope that the publisher will produce a revised and expanded version. If they were to do so, I would consider using it as a text for a class I teach on global Christianity.

I read this book for my church history class at Moody Bible Institute and found the book quite possibly more insightful than my teacher (who was also very good). It's a great read, would recommend it to anyone interested in understanding more about the history of the Christian religion.

A MYSS-MISS MIX OF FUZZY MYSTICISM AND JUNG AND FREUD:)

I like Carolyn Myss and her works through the years. I even do not mind her arrogant attitude. As a surgeon myself I LIKE blunt and to-the-point. But this book to me is a Myss-MISS--pardon the pun. It is really the Archetype book and Anatomy of the Spirit in cliff-notes combined with some fuzzy versions of Eastern Mysticism, chakra analogies (that contradict many of the Eastern philosophies she is quoting)...and the blather just goes on and on. 3/4 of the way through the book I just was not INTERESTED in it enough to continue reading it--rare for me as I read like fire and consume spiritual books:) I also wholeheartedly DISagree that EVERYONE has at least 4 Archetypes in their psyche. That is a rather bold arrogant move to appoint herself supreme ruler...:) I think she has become too beeg fer her britches here and this book---as I said, it is a Myss MISS.

One of my favorite books!

I've been reading and listening to Caroline Myss since discovering her two cassette (Yes, for you younger folks, those were bulky plastic tapes we listened to before CDs and digital streams.) presentation "Spiritual Madness" at a video store. (Those were the days. *Sigh*) Her work has enlightened me and helped me through all kinds of crises. She has also helped me realize that conventional religion doesn't work for me. I believe "Spiritual Madness" is her best work. It focuses on archetypes and how each of us has a unique combination of them that provides both an understanding and a pathway for how to live and interact with each other. Caroline never pulls punches -- I've seen her in person, too -- as she describes the various archetypes and explains how important it is to look beyond ego and vanity to find your true self. Myss isn't a New Age guru, she's Caroline Myss -- teacher, mystic, medical intuitive, and one of the most fascinating people I've ever met.

Only buy if you're also willing to buy Myss' archetype cards and/or archetype book

I like the idea of working with archetypes to uncover patterns, choice points, and--in Myss' language--the best possible outcome with one's "sacred contract." The book spends considerable time on developing an archetypal chart of 12 characters for individuals to explore his/her own sacred contract. Here's the rub: Myss only writes about 4 archetypes in detail (child, victim, prostitute, saboteur)--the rest one has to either guess at OR buy further Myss products because they aren't addressed the book--making the book incomplete otherwise. Very disappointing.

Stabilization of traditional social institutions and the effects of new institutional spending account for the modest crime declines of the 1990s.
