I adore this book.

I make short films and teach film and video, (as well as computer art), and "The Animation Book" made me weep gentle tears of joy.
Not only is it full of the information that both the beginner and the more advanced animator will use, it is an inspiration. It has stills from some of the best independent animations around, as well as pages Laybourne prompts the reader to draw in and rip out.
After reading the intro and flipping faster and faster through the pages, I felt a very powerful need to animate - right now! I haven't felt this excited about what I do in years, and I can't say I've ever found a book that has thrilled me so.
Just to make certain I wasn't being overly sentimental, I put this book in the hands of several non-animating, and highly cynical individuals. One by one, each succumbed to the charms of the little drawings of equipment and then distractedly searched around for a pencil, so they too could begin the exercises.
This was written in 1979, and Laybourne does quite an admirable job of discussing computer technology of that time. But this book rightly focuses on hands-on, experimental work with garage sale equipment; the wonderful animations an individual can make in his/her kitchen.
I want every student, every friend, to get this book, especially those working with new technology. It's a terrific antidote to the superficiality so often imposed by the ever-changing computer. "The Animation Book" encourages playing with ideas and aesthetics, a delightful reminder of what makes moving images amazing.

technical aspects of traditional hand drawn animation

The Animation Book seems geared for professional animation students or the serious amateur, not the casual viewer of Saturday morning fare. The book explores many techniques such as flip books, cutouts, clay, drawing directly on film, and a host of "experimental" gadgets. However, the emphasis is on cel animation, and, in particular, the equipment required to produce it. I especially enjoyed Laybourne's suggestions for homemade animation stands, and inexpensive choices for cameras, editing equipment, and production planning. The author devotes almost no space to artistic concerns but there are plenty of other books for that. Much of the content of this book has been made obsolete by computer graphics which plays an ever-increasing role in the industry. However, if you would like to take a stab at making your own cartoons the old fashioned way, this book will provide much of the technical information you will need.

I enjoyed the variety of short stories. My favorites are "The Gilded Six Bits and Their Eyes Are Watching God.

My favorite passage from the Gilded Six Bits:

"One night Joe came back home around midnight & complained of pains in the back. He asked Missie to rub him down with liniment. It had been three months since Missie had touched his body(her husband caught her in bed with another mad - Big Sistahs note) and it all seemed strange. But she rubbed him. Grateful chance. Before morning youth triumphed and Missie exulted."

What a lovely way to say they had relations - Big Sistha Pat

Their Eyes Are Watching God

I simply love this book. I love the language. It is so poetic. The following passages stood out for me:

"Naw. We been tuhgether round two years. If you kin see de light at day break, you don't keer if you die at dust. It's so many people never, seen de light at all. Ah wuz fumblin' round and God opened de door."

This passage for me is so beautiful and true. So many people die having not experienced real love. Big Sistah Pat.

"The monstropolous beast had left his bed. The two hundred miles an hour wind had lose his chains. He seized hold of his dikes and ran forward until he met the quarters; uprooted them like grass and rushed on after his supposed-to-be conquerors, rolling the dikes, rolling the houses, rolling the people in the houses a long with other timbers. The sea was walking the earth with a heavy heel."

An interesting read

The stories in this book cover just about everything from tales of alligator men to torrid love affairs. They provide a lot of insight into African American culture and history, and are even written in dialect. The forward included in this edition really helped me understand what I was reading when I started the book. Some of the stories are a little confusing though, because they are printed in two different versions in this book. There's a glossary of slang which is also really helpful. I'd reccomend it for anyone who's a fan of folklore or African American history or literature.

I wasn't disappointed in everything, but was expecting a more advanced content. The biggest disppointment is the absence of quality graphics in the book and in particular the Kindle Fire edition...and there was no link to download the project exercises that are otherwise conatined on a CD in the printed version. My advice...do not download the electronic version and definitely do not download this if you are already familiar with the basic concepts of 3ds Max.

Gr 1–3—Ella Mae usually gets her new school shoes as hand-me-downs from her older cousin, Charlotte. One day, Charlotte's old shoes are too tight for Ella Mae and so the girl gets to buy a brand new pair of shoes. At Johnson's General Store, however, Ella Mae is treated differently from another customer with "yellow pigtails." The treatment is because of the color of her skin: she is served second even though she arrived first, and she is not allowed to try on any of the beautiful new shoes. With a little brainstorming and some hard work, Ella Mae and Charlotte come up with a plan to allow everyone to try on shoes before they buy them. The illustrations paint an accurate historical picture of the 1950s and do well enough to bring out the characters' emotions, which may not otherwise be noticed in the text. An author's note at the end explains Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, and the evolution of language used to describe African Americans. The use of a lesser-known Jim Crow situation makes it stand out from other titles dedicated to this topic, but the message is very similar. Susan Lynn Meyer is an English Professor at Wellesley College and a children's book author. Her WWII/Holocaust story�Black Radishes�won the Sydney Taylor Honor Award in 2011 and was named a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year. She lives in Massachusetts.

This is a brilliant, well written story that is perfect for educating ...

This is a brilliant, well written story that is perfect for educating young & older children about this shameful, terrible part of American history. I have 3 girls of varying ages (11, 10 & 7) and they all loved this story which really captures the personal, heartfelt feelings of what it must have been like growing up in a time of such prejudice. Besides the fact that the title really caught my eye, as these where my eldest daughters first words! My eldest girls loved the entrepreneurial skills of the characters Ella Mae & Charlotte and their clever, wonderful way around the hurtful, discrimination! My youngest (whose middle name is Charlotte) was appalled that this actually went on and so followed a lovely history lesson and hopefully helping to end treating our brothers and sisters in this way! They particularly loved the beautiful drawings that help bring this heartwarming story to life. A definite, must read & buy for any young reader.

This book should be in every classroom in America

It's not easy to write a picture book for young kids that tackles a tough subject in an age-appropriate way--while still being entertaining. NEW SHOES does all of that and more, and it does it beautifully. I especially love how the girls solve the problem themselves, and for their whole community, too! Moving and inspirational, this book belongs in every classroom in America.

New Shoes is a beautiful, informative, and heartfelt story that kids can relate to. Not only does it make discrimination clear, in a way that readers can identify with, but also the main character, Ella Mae, and her cousin, Charlotte, are resourceful, community-minded girls. I can hardly wait until my granddaughter is old enough for me to read it to her.

Best book on falcon medicine

This book is the best of the best in falcon medicine. Many other avian books are very theoretical and it is difficult to use this knowledge in practice. But this book is different: It is so easy to use in daily life. Very practical oriented, it provides great tips and tricks that make life for falconers and vets much easier. I have treated several of my falcons now with the help of this book and I must really say IT WORKS! Even my vet is so happy that he bought it for himself and uses it now. If you work with falcons, this book is the ultimate must have. It is definitely the best book on falcon medicine on the market.
