Would Buy It Again!

Really great learning tool. I had dabbled with Publisher before, but had not really learned to use it well. Walking through each lesson (in order) was so very helpful. I now put together a monthly club newsletter and feel very confident it how it looks! Well worth the money!

This is a very good book that takes one through various projects in easy steps. The book is well illustrated and the screen prints are easily readable, which makes the text much easier to follow.
But, the begining of Chapter 2, one begins to realise that not everything is included in the book! "Open file PB02Try from the data files for this lesson". These files are available on-line by going to [...] and downloading them for free. Just save them into a separate directory and the rest is plain sailing. Glitch over.
From thereon in, enjoy the learning experience.
The book is totally American-based but put the Brit filter in and modify to taste.

Eleven Pounds shares the couple's courage in moving forward even as they were touched by tragedy. George and Cora taught their children and generations following that they could compete with anybody anywhere if they maintained a strong work ethic, commitment to faith and family, and a belief that the color of a man's skin cannot destroy his potential.

Their story also stresses the importance of choosing marriage partners based on character, being brave in the face of adversity, helping others, and trusting in God when darkness descends.

Jewel Thomas drew on oral history from family members, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, census records, and birth, marriage and death certificates in crafting this unforgettable story of one family's determination to not only survive but thrive.

Jewel Thomas began research for this book in 2003, meeting weekly with her source, Lillian Robinson (Aunt Jack), to learn more about the family's history. Jewel, born and raised in Herminie, Pennsylvania, has a master's degree in public policy and management from Carnegie-Mellon University. She believes that every family has a story that is worth telling.

Eleven Pounds was a beautifully written and inspiring account of a family overcoming a tremendous number of hardships in the early 1900's from discrimination to family tragedies. Jewel is very descriptive of the situations that this family has gone through, which makes it easy to empathize and bond with them. There is never a dull moment with the Pounds family, which makes this an especially enjoyable read. You will not regret buying this book, it is truly a wonderful read and contains lessons and laughs for every generation. It is sure to spark your interest in researching your own family history. This true story shows that you never know what you may come across.

Real events and the real and beautiful people sharing their lives within them.

My review is somewhat biased for I know most of the people in the story. I had a great nostalgic trip as I read. Jewel described the environment and the people very accurately and with intense feelings. This book was so interesting to me that I read it in less than one day. My grandparents operated a hotel in the building where the later dances were held. I have dear memories of many family events that took place in that building, and I went to school with a number of the people she described as partrons, or musicians, at those dances.

Being interested in the subject of genealogy, I purchased the book with great anticipation. The author has created an interesting and effective weaving of historical fact and plausible fiction. Both the style and subject matter make the book suitable for a wide audience. "Eleven Pounds: It Came to Pass" is an easy read: you won't need an unabridged volume of the Oxford English Dictionary as your tableside reading companion. The story also moves quickly as it gives details of the lives of the family members who constitute the book's eponymous title. A chief attribute of the book is that it has an almost universal appeal. Nearly all ethnic groups and cultures can relate to the themes of adaptibility, identity, acceptance, faith, hard work and perseverance that course through its pages. If the book manages to stir in its readers the same sentiment that stirred in me: a profound sense of appreciation for the lives and sacrifices of family members who came before, then it can be considered an important read that serves a marvelous purpose.

Further, his studies demonstrate that "pessimistic children are at much higher risk for becoming depressed than optimistic children." Seligman discounts prevalent theory that children who are encouraged by others to feel good about themselves will do well. Instead, he proposes that self-esteem comes from mastering challenges, overcoming frustration and experiencing individual achievement. Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including Learned Optimism and Authentic Happiness. He is past president of the American Psychological Association as well as the division of clinical psychology of the American Psychological Association, and former director of clinical training in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Maybe it's Mistitled, but it's GREAT

I don't disagree entirely with the one-star reviewer--optimism is hardly the answer to all of society's problems. However, as the parent of a son who often shows signs of inheriting ... depression ..., I found this book to be a proactive alternative to the little lectures on over-reacting to situations that I had been giving! I explain the steps Seligman suggests as games we play to prepare him for middle school and they get him thinking about the control he can exert in his own perceptions (this is a skill often not acquired until late adolescence, if ever). Finally, some support for at-risk kids! I only wish more parents were aware of the influence their behavior wields--this book helps both parent and child increase self-understanding. Other books on childhood depression depend too heavily on explaining available medication--THANK YOU, Mr. Seligman, for offering concrete advice on drug-free depression-prevention.

Optimism-an Emotional Intelligence Competency That Works

I'm an Emotional Intelligence coach. I work with adults teaching them EQ competencies, including optimism, and I've seen it work wonders! Since reading this book, I've been teaching it to children with the same results. It's particularly important in children with high IQs. Their propensity to perceive more deeply, and their perfectionism made them set-up for depression. They can get into trouble with their thinking (can't we all!). Seligman's theory works, if you take the time to understand it and follow his instructions. The essence of optimism is not the upward cycle, but being able to avoid the downward spiral when a disappointment, loss or failure occurs. It's a way of thinking that can be changed. Would you like to live 19% longer, enjoy better health, be more likely to fulfill your potential ... all this backed by Seligman's years of research ... and wouldn't you want this for your child?

Effective in helping middle school parents and children

I am a 6th grade counselor in a private school. After reading this book I used it to prepare a workshop and to help several families abandon child management systems that were highly stressful and unproductive. The workshop got very high ratings and requests for follow ups. Several families reported a significant improvement in their quality of life following interventions based on Dr. Seligman's ideas.

I believe that Dr. Seligman has good intentions when he applies this book to depression but that this emphasis limits the book's potential. It has much broader value and can help almost any family improve the middle school and teen years experience. I am looking forward to helping many more members of our community with the use of this tool.

If you are having difficulty with the 11 to 15 year old developmental process or you just simply want to look at some really good ideas this is a book for you. It is an easy read and well detailed. Enjoy!

Not for our stage of life, but some fun ideas

As you can guess, this book is filled with 52 different dates you can take with your spouse, that don't fall into the typical dinner-and-a-movie routine. The book is written by Randy Southern, with an introduction from Gary Chapman who explains the importance of reading your spouse's "love language" in order to form a more intimate bond.

I like the layout of the book. Each date starts with a Bible verse, tips to make it happen, conversation starters for the date, and how to incorporate your spouse's love language into your date followed by a bunch of Bible verses that discuss the theme of the date. There were some really interesting dates: going to a garage sale together, taking a bike ride together, building with Legos, going ice skating, a date that needs to stay entirely in the car, and watching a sunrise together. Because of the pre-date and post-date content in the book, each date had a purpose of building true intimacy instead of just going out to pass the time.

Before I can accurately share my opinion of this book, I have to explain my husband a little bit. He's very much a military man...which means he likes routine, and doesn't like to share his feelings. Ever. He has amazing strength and wisdom, and I am grateful for how much he balances me in my emotions, but I have to admit that he was not interested in most of the dates, and really wasn't a fan of the conversation starters or references to love language. I think he finds it all a bit frilly. But, that's just my husband, and I love him for who he is =)

That said, I did like the ideas in the book. I'm not sure it really works for us in this stage of life (we don't get the chance to get out without the kids much, and we'd probably prefer to go places and do things we know we're going to enjoy to take advantage of the time away.) But, I think it still offered some good advice and ideas, and I'm sure there are many couples who could benefit from reading this, and incorporating some of the dates for their next evening (or morning, or afternoon) away. I think this book is probably best suited for couples without children, or couples with older children. It would be difficult to do some of these ideas when you're parenting littles.

This book is packed with loads of ideas for creative dates. But they aren’t just dates. They are intentional opportunities to engage in meaningful communication and relationship building as well as spiritual growth. Couples will even some ideas for spicing up their sexual relationship sprinkled throughout some of the dates.

One of the things I love about 52 Uncommon Dates is the way Southern intentionally constructed each date to include the following components:
• Set the Scene - a description of the date;
• Make It Happen - tips for what to do and where to go;
• Finish Strong - questions and suggestions for talking about the date and deepening intimacy;
• Mind Your Language - ideas on how to incorporate the five love languages and fill your spouse's love tank;
• Take It to God - suggestions for praying together before, during, or after the date; and
• Dig Deep - scriptures to look at as a couple, grow spiritually as a couple.

I have to say that there are a few dates my husband and I won’t be using, like the Haunted House (Halloween) Date, the Dancing Date, and the Amusement Park Date. However, even without those three, there are almost enough dates for one a week for an entire year. I especially like how each date is intentionally designed to help couples grow together spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

52 Uncommon Dates is one I’ll be giving as wedding shower gifts in the future. A great marriage takes work, and regular dates are a key tool for strengthening marriages. I highly recommend this book to all couples whether they’ve been married just a few months or more than 50 years. There’s always more to learn about your spouse, and author Randy Southern helps facilitate growth in intimacy with these fun, interesting and intentional date ideas.

Right stage of life...

Do you have a regular date night your spouse? Are you looking to start a regular date night with your spouse? Then this might be the right book for you.

Similar to our 52 First Dates Challenge, these 52 Uncommon Dates will give you ideas and inspiration for scheduling a date night for your marriage. From a Gardening Date to the 5K Date, this book includes setting the scene, making it happen, speaking your spouse's love language, taking it to God, and digging deep in scripture.

This book has a lot to offer. The dates are fun and engaging. My word of caution is that most of them are out of the house dates. As a young mom of three, many of them weren't manageable in our present stage of life. I'm hanging on to this one for the future, but for now, I'm also mixing with some of our own ideas.
