About the Author
Steven S. Smith is a Professor of Political Science, Kate M. Gregg Distinguished Professor of Social Science, and Director of the Murray Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government, and Public Policy at Washington University, St Louis. He has chaired the Legislative Studies Section of the American Political Science Association and has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Political Science, The Journal of Politics and Legislative Studies Quarterly.
Jason M. Roberts is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina. He co-edited the book Why Not Parties? Party Effects in the US Senate (2009). His articles have been published in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science and Legislative Studies Quarterly.
Ryan J. Vander Wielen is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Temple University. His articles have appeared in Political Analysis, Legislative Studies Quarterly and Public Choice.

Good introduction to Congress

The authors note their purpose in writing this book thus (page vii): "Our primary goal in writing this is to instill in students and general readers an appreciation for the importance of a strong legislature in the American democracy." This work does a nice job meeting that goal. Indeed, I am considering using this as a textbook in a college class on Legislative Process.
The book begins with a chapter on "The Troubled Congress," noting the extensive dissatisfaction with what many see as a currently dysfunctional body. Nonetheless, Congress remains a central actor in national decision-making because of the role given it by the Constitution. The book itself covers the standard issues relating to Congress: its history and development, Congressional elections and policy making implications thereof, the lives of members of Congress, parties in Congress and their leaders, the committee system, rules of the legislative process (obviously critical; the arcane procedures of the Senate make change a challenge), legislative voting, the relationship of Congress with the President and the Courts and interest groups and lobbyists, and Congress' role in the budget process.
All in all, a readable book that covers the basics of Congress. Want to learn more about Congress? Not a bad starting point!

Great read for PolySci Congress classes

This book is a great and short read for PolySci majors studying Congress. Easy to understand and as detailed as one would like not to get bored.
