About the Author
Sensei Piotr Szeligowski 4th Dan is an internationally renowned and greatly accomplished author, Kyokushin Karate fighter, instructor, and tournament referee. During his successful career he has won many prestigious titles and awards, including 1995 European IFK Kyokushin Karate Champion, bronze medal at The 1993 Oyama Cup, ‘The Best Technique Award’ at the 1995 IFK Lightweight World Cup in Moscow. He’s also a multiple medalist and champion of the Polish Knockdown Tournaments. Sensei Szeligowski served as IFK Country Representative in Poland 1994-2007. Good book for Kyokushin members

This book is quite good for beginner or even a professional kyokushin practitioner.
This book dived into three chapters, first chapter give a lot information about history of kyokushin and karate. The second chapter give information about physiology, tactical and intellectual conditioning, nutrition, first aid in injuries. Closed by third chapter about interview with sensei Piotr Szeligowski.

Great for Novice and Expert!

As a certified fitness trainer, I found Sensei Piotr Szeligowski's book both enlightening and a great reference. Those starting in the field of karate will appreciate the clear photos of correct positions, stances and movements. Experts will enhance their knowledge with psychological and intellectual conditioning techniques. The book not only covers the history of karate, but a holistic view of what it takes to be an outstanding athlete including nutrition and training regimens. A must-have for those interested in budo and knockdown fighting!

I'm disappointed

I expected more from this book, but I was disappointed because it's a collection of photos and texts without foundation. Looks more like a diary than a book for learning support in Kyokyshin Kumite.

Do not buy this book, rather I recommend the video collection as foundations of Kyokushin (Kyokushin Karate Training Martial Arts DVD) and videos on YouTube.

Its background covers the relationship of Britain and Afghanistan from a troubled beginning with accounts of the disasters and successes of the 1st and 2nd Afghan Wars, the perennial political problems along India’s’ tribal frontiers, the role of the Wahhabi sect which developed into the Taliban as it is today, the ‘Great Game’ of political strategy played out between Britain and Russia, and the British Invasion of Tibet 1903/04 which was motivated by fears of the Tsar’s conquests in central Asia and his expansionist intentions towards the jewel of the British Empire, only to be marred by political indecision and incompetent military leadership.

The feats of personal endurance demanded by service in the ‘Indian Army’ of Colonel Brander’s day may seem to surpass fiction but they are recorded by history as fact. His colorful personal story portrays vanished days of the Raj at its apogee, as well as the unchanging dynamics underlying today’s conflict in Afghanistan and the dire consequences of Tibet’s attempt to preserve its treasured mediaeval isolation in a changing world."

A treasure-house of unfamiliar and unexpected information

"Waziristan to Tibet" was my most rewarding read in a long time. Don't be put off by the purely military title of this engaging book because it opens eyes to all sorts of ancillary interests. For example I had no idea that units of the Indian Army constructed the railway from Sibi to Quetta through perhaps the most challenging mountain terrain ever attempted, or later the Gilgit stages of the Indus Valley Highway. The railway included 158 bridges including the dizzying Chappar Rift crossing. Its scenic wonders made it a tourist attraction until sections were destroyed by Baluchistan terrorist action in 2006. All this, as Colonel Brander remarks, by Sikh volunteers whose valorous service was given with spade in one hand and rifle in the other. As to the fruitless invasion of Tibet, with its bizarre personality conflicts at every level and the amazing endurance of the troops concerned, the historic facts challenge belief. The book has enduring relevance to current problems of the region as well, including the rise of the Taliban, which will not escape the thoughtful reader. Stimulating and enjoyable. (Google 'Chappar Rift' for amazing pics. Colonel Brander was much too modest about the railway which was called "The Engineering Miracle of the World".)

A fascinating historical account of the British in India and Tibet

I found this book to be fascinating and very well done. Based on the journals of his grandfather, Colonel H.R. Brander, Cyril Lucas has provided a very interesting and coherent account of the world and happenings of India and Tibet during the period of the late 1880s to early 1900s. In reading the descriptions of the life and campaigns of the British and Indian armies in India, Afghanistan, and Tibet, I was impressed at how much has changed but how much is still the same in that area. For example, I read the book on a Kindle while following the routes of travel on an iPad using Google Maps. But, Afghanistan is in as much turmoil now as it was at the turn of the last century when the British and Indian governments were concerned about potential Russian influence in the region.

It helps, but you do not have to be a history buff to enjoy this book. The marches, battles, and interpersonal relationships are interesting enough to be enjoyed even if the book had been pure fiction. It just makes it more special to know that the book is based on a factual account and that the battles and marches really happened.

Fascinating and Insightful

A friend recommended this book and I was delighted to find it lived up to his glowing review. Combining extensive contemporary research with the personal journals of his grandfather, Cyril Lucas, tells the story of Colonel H. R. Brander's service in the 32nd Sikh Pioneers from the late 1880's up to the British expedition to Tibet, culminating in 1904. It is a truly astounding tale of courage and fortitude, displayed by Brander and the men he commanded, who together faced danger and hardships that often defy belief. It is the personal element that makes it such a riveting read, bringing to life the culture, history and politics of India, Afghanistan and Tibet during that period. Tragically, it is all too relevant to today and it helped me understand the historical context for the continuing turmoil in this deeply troubled part of the world. Highly recommended!

It's smaller than I expected, but I didn't pay close attention to the measurements in the product description. I like that the remarks are funny without being cute or sentimental. I like cute and sentimental, but I like the sense of humor that's sprinkled throughout the planner.

No Surprises Here (and that's a good thing!)

This book is a welcome follow-up to Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book. The only frustration I had with the Jazz Piano Book is that it could not tell me EVERYTHING. The Jazz Piano book only introduced Drop 2 techniques, leaving the voracious student wondering where to find more information. The Drop 2 Book fills that void with the same clarity and pace that made the Jazz Piano Book so useful and popular. The book explains major, minor and dominant progressions, tweaks to make chords sound "modern", applications, problems and work-arounds, soloing, comping, the Altered Bebop Minor Scale, and suggested practice routines. As an added bonus, this book includes a CD with recorded examples. Most students at this level could hammer out the examples, but the relative volumes of the left and right hands are important to this technique. Such nuances cannot be expressed clearly with standard music notation, so the CD is more than just a nice afterthought. If you have worked through the Jazz Piano Book and feel ready to explore Drop 2 voicings in greater depth, this book will take you there. Buy it and recommend it to all your friends so that we can see more Masterclass books by Mark Levine.

Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

I love this book. I just bought it last week. I jumped right into it and I love it! I am not a piano player but I write music. The explanation of the 'drop 2' technique in this book is the best explained and illustrated that I have ever seen or heard. I have tried other music books that describe the 'drop 2' method but I had problems in applying it to real music. I kept running into problems with melody notes that didn't seem to allow you to use this technique musically or effectively. I wanted to get this book to see how this author explains the 'drop 2'. And I was not disappointed but ecstatic. YES!!! This was the information I needed. Mark Levine points out alternative voicings or should I say reharmonizations to correct those melody notes that just do not allow you to use the 'drop 2' voicings. Also, these reharmonizations give a much more modern sound than the way other jazz theory books teach and they don't take away from the initial music quality of the original chords. Mark Levine's teaching of the 'drop 2' gives you room to actually create your own musical artistic sound for your own personal arrangements of melodies using this technique. It is well explained and clearly illustrated. I must warn though, as Mr. Levine explains in the beginning of the book, you should be somewhat advance in your music theory knowledge. Mr. Levine comes right out of the chute explaining this technique and does not digress into any theory knowledge. The accompanying cd is a plus because you can hear the illustrations for yourself.

This is a technique that not only can be used by piano players but also for anyone that writes or arranges music. Since I write and arrange music, this book is a huge blessing for me. Simply wonderful!!!

Locked hand voicings

This is almost a one topic volume but invaluable. Whether you want to voice melody lines or improvised lines using Shearing type voicings or Drop 2 voicings this is the best volume going. As with all Mark Levine's publications this is beautifully written and produced. It is the best exposition of the bop scale that I have seen.

COMBUSTIBLE PHYSICAL CONNECTION

OMG, this book had me laughing out loud until I had tears and couldn't see to read. I have read all three of The Marriage Market Books, but this one had to be my favorite. The antics of Euphemia aka Effie Lane and her angst with Sam Jordan are priceless. Talk about explosive, these two together are dynamite. I have thoroughly enjoyed these stories and seeing all the trouble that these three Boston socialites can get into, but Effie takes the cake! The plot kept me totally captivated and the pages turning to see what would happen next. The dialog was hilarious and entertaining. The charming cast of characters has made this series so delightful, with wild shenanigans, sassy mouths, daring adventures, stubborn wills, multiple spankings and erotic teasers. The saddest part was reading 'the end.' I do hope there will be more to this delightful series, we do have so many brides still to wed.

Funny, sassy and sexy - great read!

Stevie has a fun, witty writing style that is just plain fun to read. Don't get me wrong - I like reading about sexy times and spanky times, and this book has them. But there's humor, character development, and a whole array of fascinating, quirky characters that make you care about them in only a few paragraphs. I LOVED Effie - she's a sassy, classy spitfire who goes after what she wants and is loyal to her friends...even if it means endangering herself and making a few bad decisions now and then. And Sam is the perfect match for her. I'm not usually a fan of non-con discipline, but Stevie keeps it light enough and "connish" enough to still be within my comfort zone, and she writes it well. I appreciate how Effie and Sam grow together as a couple and make some compromises for each other. Well done!

I absolutely loved this book!! From the beginning to the very last page! Effie, is by far, my most favorite character! She is full of spirit and sass and she is never worried about speaking her mind! I was laughing out loud while reading and cheering her on, seriously. Sam is strong enough to handle her and boy, do the sparks fly! A fantastic addition to the series and you get to visit with the characters from the first two books. This stands alone nicely but if you haven't read the other two you are seriously missing out!

Great Resource for Sight Reading

Recommended by my daughter's violin teacher, she's been using this book with excellent results for some time. Unless you're very knowledgeable, you'll need to use this book as a teaching tool with a professional instructor or you'll just be running through technique without fully mastering them.

Pretty Good-layout a little confusing.
