Positive Surprise

Wow! - When I got the book I was first of all very positively surprised by the weight of the book...it's not the 192 pages as advertised but rather an impressive 320 pages(!) purely devoted to the French Tarrasch Variation for White (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2...)
Additionally, this EverymanChess-book sports white and clean quality paper, not the poor newspaper-type recycling paper Everyman used for some other books recently.

The book is then divided into 5 Parts
Part1 - General Ideas
Part2 - 3rd Move Alternatives after 3.Nd2
Part3 - 3.Nd2 c5
Part4 - 3.Nd2 Nf6
Part5 - 3.Nd2 de4: 4.Ne4:

I particularly like Part 1 which is divided into:
1 - Tips how to work on your openings in general
2 - French Tarrasch Middlegame Strategy
3 - French Tarrasch Typical Endgames

The bibliography sports all relevant books written about the French/Tarrasch Opening over the last 15 years, among others Watsons' "Dangerous Weapons" book from 2007 and the rare "Winning with the French" by Uhlmann.

I have to admit that I haven't worked through the entire book yet, but from what I can judge by a first glance (I'm 2000 USCF rated) is that the author, an International Master, obviously provides you with a first-class repertoire for White covering all possible Black responses.
He also discusses the topical middlegame positions ('tabiyas') that arise from the opening, and this approach is exactly what the best players do when studying openings.
320 pages on the Tarrasch variation alone indicate that the author provides you with all relevant information you will need for playing this opening for White.
By the way, this variation is very popular among the world's best players and today Morozevich playing a French with Black got blasted away in 31 moves by the Ukrainian player Efimenko Zahar at the Dresden Olympiad with the Tarrasch variation. So you can bet that this opening is Spot On!.
In my opinion this will become the new French 'Bible' for White.
Recommended for all tournament players who are looking for building up a serious repertoire.

Excellent, but a tough slog for this average player.

As a French Tarrasch player with the white pieces, I was incredibly excited when I heard that this book was coming out. After it arrived, I couldn't believe it - 320 pages dedicated solely to the FT! All in typical high quality Everyman format. I've worked (and I mean WORKED) my way through most of it, and feel somewhat inclined to write a review (so here I am).

Before I continue, I must confess something: I'm fairly confident that this is a chess book that is above my ratings pay grade. Plain and simple. I'm not developed enough as a chess player to glean all the good stuff from these pages...and even though I am confident that this is an excellent book, I found much of the going laborious and frustrating. Maybe it's because the book was simply written for someone much, much better than me?

I saw where Donaldson recommended this book for players rated 2000 and above. I suppose that seems right. Make no mistake about it, this is a TOUGH, TOUGH book for an "average" player like me (I'm USCF 1550) to get through. I usually do just fine with most chess books (even the purportedly difficult/expert only ones). Not the case with this one.

So please keep that in mind as you read my comments below.

The "General Themes" section at the front of the book is great, and gives an overview of the basic ideas and themes you can expect/need to know in the typical opening, middlegame and endgame of this opening. I would guess that we will continue seeing more and more opening books written with this type of "general" opening knowledge about specific openings in the future (in fact, it seems we already are starting to see that change).

My biggest "issue" with the book, if you could call it that, is that it's just too damn dense in many areas...but then it will turn around and fail to address a move that is both natural (and thus likely to be seen by me and those of my ilk in our patzer games) and is backed up by big silicone Rybka god. In many areas there is incredible (overwhelming?) depth...in others, an odd absence of depth (or even inclusion at all).

I would argue that the book could have easily been 100 pages shorter, but for the author insisting on taking each and every possible sideline he mentions 25-30 moves deep. I'm not kidding. There are actually games in the book that are awarded a '?' or '?!' on, say move 9, but then another 20+ moves are included beyond where this dubious move or blunder occurred. This is THAT kind of openings book. In this area, I think the author could take some real inspiration from an openings writer like Andrew Greet or James Vigus, who both seem excellent at conveying both the "general" opening ideas and the nitty gritty details to us mere mortals, without burying us in line after line after line of moves and analysis.

To the author's credit, he's clearly done his homework and he put himself heart and soul into this book (which can't be said for many of the authors putting out opening books), and again, if I were rated 2100 I may have a very different review (something more akin to Sinbad's review below). I would guess that this will probably be the French Tarrasch user's bible for a number of years to come...I just wish it was a little more "user friendly". You would think that something less than 320 pages would have sufficed to get the point across.

Recommended for those who play the white side of the Tarrasch French

Excellent coverage of the White side of the Tarrasch French. If you play the black side of this opening, keep in mind that this is a repertoire book for White and not all White choices are covered, only the ones that the author considers to be the strongest.

Great tie in

Normally I am strictly a DC Comics guy, but I am a big fan of the show Castle. These graphic novels are based off of the books Richard Castle wrote about Derrick Storm. This graphic novel follows right after the events in Deadly Storm. Derrick Storm is still a private detective, but now he is also a spy working for the CIA. After recently loosing his first CIA handler, he is trying to throw himself into his work. Helping a wealthy heiress get back the money she was conned out of, Storm comes across an African Freedom fighter.

The Freedom fighter tracks Storm down and begs him to find his sister who is trapped in a human traffic ring. I thought this was a great plot especially for a comic book. There is quite a bit of action in this book, and the artwork is really well done. Like any spy novel there are gun fights, chases and beautiful women. One in particular make Storm think he has seen a ghost.

This is the second graphic novel in the Derrick Storm series, and I think they are a lot of fun. If you are a fan of the show but not a fan of comics, I would recommend this. It is a lot of fun as a fan to read these stories that we hear about on the show. The fact it is in a comic makes it even better for me. If you are fan of comics and not the show, I would still recommend this. The story is interesting and the artwork is well done. This is definitely worth the read.

Great Graphics!

The artwork is fantastic. Obviously this is a graphic novel for grown-ups, so to speak, but it's very well written and reads like a novel. It has an interesting plot, and some great twists and ends on a cliffhanger that makes you want more.

Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.
The book also provides review quizzes after every ten chapters, as well as practice readings written like articles one might see in the news or on a blog, et cetera.
Overall, I find that this book is a very good introduction to the German language for anyone interested, whether a student, or just a casual learner such as myself.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergn�gen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.

Beware of the wolf in sheep's clothing and DO NOT BUY this book...

Admittedly, I have typed and deleted my review of this book a couple times now because it's been hard to find the words to express how greatly disappointed I am with not only the book but the author, and the members of the Michael Jackson fan community who support this book of lies, fantasies, and deception.

Let me first say that I read the entire book, cover to cover. I read the prologue online a couple months ago and although I was displeased with what I read then, I was hopeful that after reading the whole book, I would get not only a better understanding of Michael and Shana's "relationship," but a better sense of her intentions for writing the book.

Well, after reading, I was able to get a better understanding of Michael and Shana's relationship. There was none. Shana worked for Michael's manager and the only reason he spoke with her consistently during her time there was because she was the receptionist. It was her job to speak to the many celebrities who called in.

Yes, Shana and Michael may have exchanged pleasantries over the office phone (not her home phone, mind you). Yes, Michael politely spoke to and possibly flirted with her when he came into the office. Yes, he put her in two of his short films, Is It Scary and Ghosts. [Please note that she asked him to be in the former. Please also note that she had a very forgettable, non-speaking role in both]. But do these occurrences equate to a relationship, or a "romance" as Shana so eloquently writes in the title? Ask yourself that question and be honest.

The most time Shana Mangatal ever spent with Michael Jackson was during her time as an extra on the set of the aforementioned short films. This fact was apparent early on while reading the book, and it became even more apparent as my reading continued.

For those of you who have actually read the book, please ask yourself why Michael decided to distance himself from Shana. According to the book, her and Michael were intimate during the summer of 1996. After that, the only other time she had contact with him was if it were through an associate/friend or through a chance encounter. She claims to have been invited by Michael to one of his concerts during the HIStory tour and to Neverland, but she never saw or spoke to him during either of these occurrences. In fact, he avoided her. She admits to fishing for information about Michael from his friends and acquaintances. She retrieved information about Michael's personal life from those around him, not from the man himself. She essentially stalked him for years, believing she had a chance even though he got married TWICE and had THREE kids with women other than her. There was no romance between these two. The only person hopelessly in love here was Shana.

But aside from her misrepresenting her "relationship" with Michael, what upsets me the most is her tone on several controversial issues. Her disapproval of his closeness to children, especially "young boys" as she loves to note, is discussed in the book on more than one occasion. She speaks on the vitiligo, the surgeries, his addiction to pain killers, etc.--all spoken about with such a tone that would be overlooked by naive fans, but would allow the media to take her words and manipulate them in an attempt to vilify Michael.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK, PLEASE. I understand that after Michael's passing, many fans want to live vicariously through those who were blessed to have been around the man we love so dearly, especially those who claim to have had a personal relationship with him. But please, do not be fooled by those who misrepresent how close they were to him. Remember that any time the name "Michael Jackson" is thrown into the equation, someone is more than likely trying to profit from that association. I didn't believe it initially, but I now believe Shana's intent was to capitalize from her supposed association with Michael. If not, she could have kept her "stories" about Michael online as she has done for years. She could have even offered to donate some of the proceeds from her book sales to Michael's favorite charity. That is the least she could do after breaking her promise to never speak on their affairs.

Do not forget that Michael was a very private person and would not want this type of book to be released. Shana states several times in her book that Michael asked her to keep any private moments they shared to herself. So why is she now coming out with this tell-all book, after he specifically asked her to NEVER share those moments with anyone? Shana's excuse is that she wants everyone to know what kind of man Michael really was, but most of what she wrote has been recycled from other books, interviews, online forums, fan fics, etc. I had an overwhelming sense of d�j� vu as I meticulously read each page. Most of what she wrote has been said before by other people in Michael's life, so do not be fooled into thinking that she is saying anything new.

Before you attack those who are questioning Shana's motives, please stop and ask yourself why YOU are so adamant about defending her. We would not even know the name Shana Mangatal had it not been for Michael Jackson. Why are you so quick to defend her over him? Why are some fans so quick to latch themselves on to anyone who claims to have been associated with Michael? I understand that he is no longer with us and some want to live vicariously through others who were around Michael, but please remember that this man had a number of people around him and the vast majority of them did not have good intentions.

For those of you who are curious about the "juicy" details (and I use that term very loosely because there was nothing juicy about this book), please save yourself a few dollars and do a quick Google search for the excerpts you are looking for. The passages you are looking for are out there, and they are free of cost. Please keep your receipt if you have already bought the book, and make use of your store's return policy. Even e-books can be returned.
As a community, we must stop lining the pockets of those who are trying to profit from being associated with Michael--especially those, such as Shana, who promote their fan fics under the guise of having written a positive book about him.

Save your money or buy Michael's 1988 autobiography, Moonwalk, instead.

Title should've been Thin Line Between Love and hate

... Stab the daggers in his casket further will ya. All of these 5 star reviews must be friends and family. Otherwise anyone who read this book saw clear as day, all the deception and revengeful hate. Low key sarcasm. Lift him up to tear hom DOWN....written Like a real life'- martin Lawrence movie "thin line between love and hate. " that's exactly the energy i picked up. Stalkerish while killing him softly because you couldn't get a clue. Janet's LOOK should have been a clue.

Don't waste your time and money

One of the worst MJ books I've ever read. Super repetitive. This book does prove the psychological issues that MJ had as far as relationships with adults. Not worth the time or money.
