Both case studies stress the roles of modelling and of proof in the construction of specifications. The final part describes the algebraic approach to specification and then summarizes and compares the various formal techniques.

The Kindle Edition is badly formatted, with missing symbols (replaced by 'iconid="xx"'), ASCII replacements for logic symbols (V and /\ for OR and AND, which looks really bad in a serif font') and formulae which look like scanned images from the book (sometimes the wrong images).

About the Author

Bertram J. Levine is the Charles Evans Hughes Fellow in Political Science (Emeritus) at Colgate University and a member of the Rutgers University Political Science Department. Prior to pursuing his PhD, he was Vice President of Federal Government Relations and State Government Relations for Johnson and Johnson. In that capacity, he headed the company's lobbying efforts in Washington, DC. During the 92nd and 93rd Congresses he served as a counsel to the Energy and Commerce Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Levine is the coauthor of Lobbying Congress: How the System Works, Second Edition. He has also authored a number of articles on interest groups and lobbying.

About the Author
Drazen Marovic is a grandmaster from Croatia, who has won medals as both player and trainer for various national teams. His pupils include Bojan Kurajica, World Under-20 Champion in 1965, and Al Modiahki of Qatar, the first Arabian Grandmaster. Marovic has a wealth of experience as a writer, editor, and television commentator on chess. He is currently the trainer of the Croatian national team.

Heir to Soltis

Having read the classic manual Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis, I was very interested to see how this book would stack up. I learned a lot from Soltis, and I hoped to expand my understanding about how pawn structures affect plans and strategy. I was not disappointed. Marovic uses many, many complete game examples, but his annotations are so succinct and clear as to make the large number of games effortless to get through. One thing he does well which is VERY hard for most chess authors is present the model games in a sequence in which their respective lessons build upon one another to deeply reinforce the concepts he's trying (and succeeding) to instruct. The one caveat, if you want to call it that, is that I think this book will be most helpful for people with an intermediate knowledge of openings, as the pawn positions discussed tend to reoccur in specific openings with specific piece placements. However, this shouldn't be a problem as I believe the intended audience is above 1600 USCF anyway, and should thus know the difference between a QGA and a QGD.

Great book for the advanced amateur

This book uses complete games to examine pawn structures--their strengths and weaknesses. Marovic uses a conversational tone to explain important points and keeps analysis to the minimum needed to illustrate the explanation. In separate chapters he examines isolated pawns, passed pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns and pawn-chains.

Marovic uses games from throughout the history of chess to illustrate his material and does a great job. I would recommend this book for players rated (USCF) from Class B and up, although rapidly advancing lower rated players would also benefit from reading the book as well.

The only thing that could make it better would be a few more diagrams.

A classic - Every serious chess player should buy this book

Traditionally chess books are often grouped in the categories: opening, middle game and ending. Marovic's book "Understanding pawn play in chess" covers a very important topic in chess, which includes all the three phases of a game. It will help you little if you know the moves in the French opening, but you don't know how to handle the pawn chain from a French opening. Means how to attack the wedge and the base of the pawn chain. "Understanding pawn play in chess" will help you to do understand what to do with pawn chain. So if you want to extend your knowledge about pawn structures this is the book for you. The topics covered in this book are: isolated pawns, isolated pawn couples, hanging pawns, passed, doubled, backward, pawn chains and pawn islands.

One Minus with this book, is that the author and Gambitbooks could have used more diagrams for each game. You must always use the board when going through this book. With more diagrams describing the most interesting position for the pawn subject, the book would become more readable.

Unique textbook

I bought this text in lieu of the much more expensive 8th edition for a class. The page numbers are different but the text is close enough. This book is a little mind-numbing but that is because it contains a tremendous amount of info you really won't find elsewhere, crammed into a very small space. It's a keeper, and that is a rare thing to say about a textbook. Try to get a copy with the disk.

I have taught Children's Literature for years and "Through the Eyes of a Child" sets the standard for related text books. It's a shame that the cost is prohibitive for many of my students. A list price of almost $200 for the 8th edition hard copy is way out of line. This is the main reason that I have not used it as a required text for the past few years...

The subtitle for this text should be "A children's literature textbook for people who don't like children's literature textbooks." In a combined 41 years of teaching children's literature at the university level, neither of us had used a text because the ones available were too expensive and too extensive for an introductory course. We own and regularly consult the available texts, but they seem more like reference books. Our biggest concern, though, was neither the cost nor the length but the hours stolen from students when they could be reading actual children's books. The focus of a children's literature course should be on those terrific children's tides. They are more important than any text, including this one, and we wrote this book on that assumption.

Children's Literature, Briefly is an overview written to shed light on children's literature and its use with young readers. Our job as teachers, whether university or elementary, is to introduce and illuminate children's books for our students. These books can offer insight and pleasure without having to be explained, analyzed, or used as objects of study. Yet some comment, if it is secondary to the books and does not become too self-important, can help teachers and children alike find their own ways to rewarding reading.

The goal of this text, then, is to provide a practical overview of children's books, offering a framework and background information while keeping the spotlight on the books themselves. That's why we kept the textbook itself and each chapter short.

And that's why we limited the book lists. The world of children's literature offers only one completely dependable book list—your own. Throughout the following chapters, we present ours, absolutely trustworthy in every way-to us. You are allowed to harbor serious doubts about our choices, but their value is that our titles may save you time wandering up and down library aisles. We organized our book lists at the end of the chapters under four different headings and offer a fifth on CD-ROM.

Ten of our favorites. The 10 books listed after each chapter in Part 2 (15 in the case of picture books) are terrific reading. These lists are very short, the result of much negotiating, often emotional but largely friendly. The purpose of the 10 is to provide solid suggestions for those who wonder where to find a good book. Each title is annotated to give a brief idea of the content.

Others we like. These titles (generally around 20) are not annotated. Although they are the second level of recommendations, each is a book we like very much. Don't be surprised if you find some of them more appealing than the 10 of our favorites.

Easier to read. Next we have added 10 titles of shorter, generally popular books. These help the teacher find nonthreatening titles for children struggling to make reading a rewarding pastime.

Picture books. In most genre chapters, we have included 10 picture books we consider representative and outstanding. Not all of these titles are for use exclusively in the lower grades; many are appropriate for the upper grades as well.

The CD-ROM. The biggest list is on CD-ROM—over 15,000 titles. The database is programmed to allow you to:

Find books quickly by searching for key words in any of the 11 information fields for each book (author, tide, illustrator, publisher, year of publication, grade level, genre, topics, description, awards, or user comment).
View complete records of information for any book on the database.
Add your own titles to the database, as many as allowed by space on your hard drive.
Add your own comments, notes, or codes to any title, whether part of the original collection or added by the user. This feature allows you to make completely individualized lists.
Make and save book lists according to your own interests or needs.
Print your lists—either an author-title list or a complete record (all 11 fields) for all books in any list you generate.
Access HELP screens for assistance in using the program, such as instructions for more sophisticated searching techniques.

More about the CD-ROM. Menus and buttons allow you to proceed with just a few mouse clicks or keyboard strokes. All of the frequently used commands have shortcut keys that are displayed in the menus for easy reference. On-line HELP guides you through the more complex commands. And an Undo command allows you to undo your more recent action.
