Belongs in your library

George Simon has a genius for organization. He takes a complicated subject of human behavior and breaks it down to easily understandable subtopics, exploring the gamut of character traits from neurosis to psychopathy. He gives simple, easy to follow strategies for dealing with the manipulative people in our lives, whether they are patients or relatives. He even addresses the concerns of people who have rid themselves of the disturbed character that plagued them and suggests ways to move on.

I was particularly impressed with his chapter on the process of character development and his conclusions as to how character - or the lack of it - affects everyone in our society at every level. It's the most pressing issue of our day, yet seems to be the most ignored.

Personally, I found the book engaging because I have read multiple works on psychopathy, abusers, victimology, narcissism, etc., even scanning the DSM IV on and off for years trying to pin-point the pathology of a disturbed character in my life. He didn't fit into any of the boxes in any of the books. Finally, in Simon's first book, "In Sheep's Clothing," I found my answer. I was thrilled to find an author who understood those people who do have a conscience but act as if they don't because it is so underdeveloped, and who could explain to me how to deal with them.

By the way, if you've read the 1-star review (I always start with the lowest review, myself) you'll probably have come the conclusion I did: that the reviewer has...issues. Yes, Simon does say that disturbed characters refuse to submit to any authority, because they want what they want now in the easiest way, and they want to "win." They have great insight, and understand that others in our culture submit to a "God," a "higher authority," or the will of "society." They just refuse to do so. So yes, the word "God" is in the book, along with many other words.

Laypersons and professionals will both benefit from this book. Enjoy!

Dispelling the myths about mental illness

The time for this book is way past overdue, and Simon's subtitle couldn't be more appropriate. Character disturbance is the phenomenon of our age, plain and simple. What does that mean? Well, in a nutshell, Dr. Simon defines character disturbance (and their more intense form of character disorders, which includes psychopathy) as the degree to which people LACK specific virtues, ethics, social conscientiousness, and commitment to social behaviour worthy of respect. It is the degree to which a person evades personal responsibility, feels entitled to things they have not earned, lies, cheats, cons, and steals. The problem is, our society has become so inured in these narcissistic patterns, to see them for what they are is as difficult as asking a fish about water. They are our new norms, rewarded in business and daily life, while true character is derided as weakness and out of date.

This book is just full of gems and is probably the best primer on manipulation tactics I've read. Simon makes the difference between neurosis and character disturbance very clear and shows how they need totally different techniques in order to correct. The old psychological concepts that were developed in order to deal with neurosis are the ones that are out of date, and are totally ineffective when it comes to poor character. They also lead to a culturally self-reinforcing blindness, where we treat people with extreme character disorders as if they just lacked 'self-esteem', had 'bad childhoods', or are just 'acting out' their own insecurities. As Simon points out, in cases of character disorders, these simply aren't true. The people engaging in such tactics know what they're doing, are perfectly fine with it, and will say anything to convince you they're not as bad as they seem. And as long as such behaviours aren't recognized and dealt with, nothing will stop them. Result? Just look at the amount of fraud and corruption in the financial industry. If they can get away with it, they will.

The book has chapters with very clear explanations of all the concepts, tactics, and disorders, as well as transcripts from some of Simon's own sessions. All are highly informative, simply written, and applicable to everything from teenagers to convicts. Highly recommended.

Outstanding book

This is a must-read for anyone going through any part of life with a person who is character disturbed. Understanding how your own behavior and weaknesses contribute to the situation is of paramount importance, and this book will help people understand how to change those behaviors. Getting inside a character-disturbed person's head is a little scary, but this, too is extremely important in order to effectively respond to them. The author knows his topic thoroughly. Great book!

Vintage Jenkins - Just Not Enough Of It!

Long-time Dan Jenkins readers will recognize a lot of punch lines when they read "The Franchise Babe", but not a single one that isn't still funny a second, third, or fourth time around. Jenkins' irreverent, non-PC take on the world of golf, as previously visited in "Dead Solid Perfect", "The Money-Whipped, Steer-Job, Three-Jack, Give-Up Artist" and "Slim and None", is still laugh out loud funny.

I liked the continuity with his earlier novels, casting his new sportswriter character Jack Brannon - still a Texan, still from Fort Worth, of course - as a proteg� of his character sportswriter Jim Tom Pinch (who crossed over between Dan's football novels and his golf novels, with one foray into his own book, "You Gotta Play Hurt"). The LPGA Tour in this novel is inhabited by "Lolitas" who knock the ball a country mile and have gams that stop traffic, Mommy-Dearest golf moms, and a drop-dead gorgeous Lolita Mom as a love interest for the lucky Jack (Dan's characters ALWAYS score well in the babe department!). Knowing that Mr Jenkins is no spring chicken, I'm grateful for every sentence that comes off of his geezer-codger typewriter, but I wish that he could have graced us with more than 224 pages in his latest effort.

One more very funny,suitably sexist,terrifically politically incorrect, bit of DeadSolidPerfection...on the LPGA tour. Cynical Sportswriter finds enlightenment via TeenGolfGoddess & her mom, with the richly portrayed wacked characters,real tour insight,golf historiography,& drop your putter one-liners we expect from Dan Jenkins. Not the outragously rich bawdy banquet of earlier works,but continuing proof that nobody can spin a hilarious,insightful,satisfying sports yarn better. BBC

Jenkins Has Lost Nothing Off the Hop on His Fastball.

I've read them all...from Dead Solid Perfect to this one. Jenkins sometimes wavers a tad, but just between you and me, every now and then you need a Dan Jenkins novel to scrape off the crust of the politically correct climate out there and get down to the nitty gritty of life and not take things so seriously.

You either like this type of writing or you don't and clearly some on here who have reviewed this novel have their knickers in a bunch and that's OK, because if some people don't react that way, Jenkins hasn't done his job.

My only real complaint about this book is that it should have been longer. It is just too much fun reading the thinly veiled satire of the PGA Tour as well as the LPGA Tour management. For instance, Ginger Clayton could have had a few more problems on her way to being the "franchise babe."

Jenkins still has a lot of hop on his politically incorrect fastball which is one of the reasons that I love his writing so much. Those of us who follow the tours understand where Dan is coming from. Carolyn Bivens, the current LPGA Commissioner is never mentioned by name, but she is very much the one in the book who is "off to Denmark" during the playing of an LPGA major which she has turned over to a Frenchman who has some really politically incorrect aspects of his businesses.

Well done satire is an art and Jenkins confines his to what he knows best...sports. If it is your cup of tea, hop on board. Better yet...make it a Bombay Sapphire martini with four olives and get into the spirit of the thing.

About the Author

This was a required textbook for my class last quarter. It was easy to read and very easy to come to class with discussion points. My only complaint is it was repetitive. As a textbook it was fine but not worth reading for information.

Ellen Karsh was the director of the New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Grants Administration for more than seven years under both Mayor Giuliani and Mayor Bloomberg, and previously developed and wrote grants for the New York City Department of Education for five years. She received her doctorate in special education from Teachers College, Columbia University and has written for Newsweek and the New York Times, among other publications. She lives in New York City.

Arlen Sue Fox was director of research, planning, and evaluation for the New York City Commission on Human Rights for ten years and consultant to nonprofit organizations, from small grassroots groups to national organizations including AARP, for twelve years. Recently retired from a position as executive director for development at Sunnyside Community Services, she is currently writing and editing. Fox lives in New York City.

Perfect Balance With the Usual Caveat

This PACKED update of the leading classic on grant writing is a huge value for the price, especially compared to similar books costing $180 or more that deliver 10% of this quality. Unlike many that set you up with a major title ("the ONLY") then let you down, the authors have delivered sage advice for years with this book, at a price those on a nonprofit budget can afford. This update covers many of the new realities in the Alice in Wonderland world of worse economics but better grants if you know how to work the system.

I've gotten numerous research grants for hundreds of millions of dollars for organizations like preptorial dot org, as well as dissertation and science nonprofits, researchers and authors. CRC offers a similar title as this one for almost 10 times the cost, which isn't nearly as practical or complete, and missing this text's fine new feature of actual q and a with grant givers.

That said, I'm hoping you know that the old saying "It's not what you know, it's who you know" applies in spades to grants. The best grants are all about networking and quiet sponsorship. Some are political. No surprise? I've never found ONE that works coming in "cold" regardless of how well written, and never seen ONE that has failed with proper networking and sponsorship, regardless of how poorly written.

This is like submitting a manuscript: you CANNOT get discouraged and you have to keep trying. Sadly, it also has little to do, at first, with the quality of your idea or proposal. My son (an MD/PhD) had a wonderful idea in Pediatrics that would save thousands of lives, which went nowhere, until he got a "big name" co-sponsor on the app. I don't want to sound cynical, but I also don't want you to think you just buy a text, no matter how good, and bam, money rolls in. Most importantly DO NOT get discouraged at a LOT of rejection, DO network, and DO ask those who say no if they know anyone who might be interested!

DO use the generous "look inside" feature from Amazon, the authors and publishers to check this out to see if it's right for you before buying. I truly believe that folks who offer look inside are ethical, proud of their work, and want buyers to be happy with their choice, wish more would do it!

With this book, with networking, and with persistence and patience, you WILL get it done!

It was okay... at best!

This book confirms my belief that there is no best way to write a grant; It is always going to depend on a number of factors. The book basically tells you to follow the instructions you are given in the application materials. There were some useful tips for finding grants but nothing that was groundbreaking or revolutionary. At best, it is an okay tool for beginners. I found most of the information in this book, for free online. Yes, the authors provide stories of times they were successful with grants and times they simply weren't which can be helpful. It is good to learn from there mistakes, but in my opinion this is hardly a reason to buy the book. I strongly believe that this book doesn't effectively cover the nuances of the entire grant-writing process as well as I would have liked or in a way that was visual and easy to understand. To sum-it-up was it a bad book...NO, is it the only grant writing book you will ever need.....Absolutely NOT!

Detailed & comprehensive info for writing grants in some, but not all, settings

The book provides detailed and comprehensive information for writing grants in not-for-profit, government, and school district settings (hence, the five-star rating). However, given the title of the book, I thought it might include substantial information on writing academic grants in a university context. It does not. For writing academic grants, a better choice would be The Nuts & Bolts of Grant Writing by Cynthia Carr. I have reviewed both books, and Carr provides good and useful guidance for effectively writing academic grants.
