The Hound of the Baskervilles (A Sherlock Holmes Graphic Novel), by Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Edginton, I.N.J. Culbard

The master of deduction Sherlock Holmes and his acolyte Dr Watson are here adapted into graphic novel form - a refreshing transformation which seems ''elementary'' for books that have previously been made into films with suspenseful storylines and strong visual elements. Full of intrigue and witty characterisation, The Hound of the Baskervilles takes readers to the Devon moors, where Holmes has to use all his logic to prove that the hound seen near Sir Charles Baskerville's dead body was not a supernatural manifestation of a curse, but the instrument of an earthly murder.

A Curse on the Aristocracy

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Ian Edginton is a well-known writer who worked for many movie studios to adapt their properties. I. N. J. Culbard is an artist and writer with considerable experience in directing commercials and short films. This 2009 book has 127 pages for the story and a preview. The ‘Foreword’ tells about Conan Doyle’s writing of this story. The last pages show the illustrator’s sketches of Holmes and Watson. Read the uncensored original story.

A visitor left his walking stick while they were out, so they deduce from this item about Dr. James Mortimer. When he returns he explains what brought him to Sherlock Holmes. There is a legend about the Baskerville family and a warning” “don’t cross the moor in the dark hours”. Recently the body of Sir Charles Baskerville was found, “death from cardiac exhaustion” from an organic disease. [What was that?] Near the body was the footprints of a gigantic hound! Others had seen this huge creature. The heir, Sir Henry, arrived in London. The next day Sir Henry visits Sherlock and tells about the strange event with his boots. Holmes observes a cab that follows Mortimer and Sir Henry. Watson will travel with Sir Henry to his estate in Devonshire. A convicted murderer has escaped from the local prison!

Baskerville Hall is a huge mansion. When Watson walks outside he meets Stapleton of Merripit House. The nearby Great Grimpen Mire is a death trap for man or beast. Beryl Stapleton warns Watson to leave for London; she mistook him for Sir Henry. Watson sends his first report to Homes. He saw Barrymore the butler with a candle at the window. The next day he sees Sir Henry paying attention to Beryl until Stapleton came and led her away. They learn why Barrymore signalled at the window! Watson, pistol in hand, goes outside with Sir Henry; they meet Selden who flees for his life. The next day Barrymore provides a clue about why Sir Charles left the house that fateful night! Watson visits Mr. Frankland to ask about his daughter Laura. Frankland tells him where a man is hiding.

Then Watson meets Sherlock who explains his actions. Holmes knows about Beryl, he traced Stapleton by the one true fact about him. They hear the growl of a hound and see a man fall to his death! That evening Sir Henry will dine with the Stapletons. Holmes and Watson say they must return to London. Holmes inspects a portrait of Sir Hugo! He observes what others only see. They visit Laura Lyons and learn more. Later they meet Lestrade at night, all three are armed with revolvers. They see Sir Henry returning home, then a huge hound running after him! All three shoot at the hound which has an eerie glow in the night. They find Beryl bound and gagged. She tells them about the island in the mire that is used as a refuge. But there is no trace of Stapleton the next day, its as if the earth had swallowed him up! The last pages tie up the loose ends.

The style of the drawings remind me of newspaper comics. I dimly remember the “Classics Comics” version from the 1950s as being better. I also like Rick Geary’s works. This version did not censor the people’s rights to carry in those days, a traditional natural right. The significance of a typewritten letter is not mentioned: you can’t analyze the handwriting. In the original Sir Henry came from Canada, a British Dominion. This is true to the original story unlike most movie adaptations. That portrait of Sir Hugo had a beard in the original (as I remember it).

Loved it! First one I read in the series
By SLIMJIM
This is a graphic novel adaptation of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes Classic, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Doyle wrote this book eight years after he penned the story called “The Final Problem,” in which Holmes has already been killed off but as the forward of this graphic novel stated, Doyle brought back Holmes because he needed “a strong central figure to hold the plot together.” In the world of Sherlock Holmes, this is a tale that was supposed to have taken place before Holmes’ death. This is my second graphic novel on Sherlock Holmes and I found it a pleasure to read this book. The plot was a real suspense and the mystery kept me going. I also appreciated the drawing and the painting in this graphic novel, especially with its coloring that perfectly sets the mood for its respective panels (dark when it’s dark, bright when it is a pleasant part of the story). I love the shadows that the illustrator has in the book as it gives that appropriate feel for a mystery especially with the fire side chats, the candles in dark hallways and outside at night. The details of the rooms in the book is beautiful. I enjoyed it enough that I’m planning to read the writer and artists’ other work on Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet.
