Another Terrific Reprint Of A Once Scandalous Pulp

While not the spiciest issue of this pulp reprint series, I very much enjoyed this volume. The stories range from naive to sophisticated. The first story "Lord of Space" by Hugh Speer is easily the weakest. An old fashioned space opera with a soft love story, it reads like an artifact from a century before the Twentieth. This story serves as a reminder as to why Spicy Adventure Stories tended avoid science fiction. Things pick up considerably with the next story, "Pearl of Hell" by Robert Leslie Bellem. Set on a pearling ship working the Australian coast, it features a very attractive wayward wife, who during the course of the story, becomes involved with four different men.In terms of sheer numbers of encounters, this may be the single spiciest story I have read in this publication! The cover story, "Burma Road" by Lew Merrill is set in Japan besieged China during the second World War. Our American ex-patriot with the extremely checkered past becomes involved with the duplicitous yet astoundingly beautiful Chinese wife of his best friend.
"Diana Daw" is "Spicy Adventures" comic feature. At this phase of the serial adventuress's adventures, She and Ted are spacefarers. "Soviet Escape" by Arthur Cutler features a most unusual setting for a "Spicy Adventures" tale. That it is also not a an anti-Soviet or anti-Communist screed is a decided plus. Sexy Russian women are NOT a new phenomenon. "Month of Trouble" by George Drake is set in Dutch colonial Borneo. A very sexy young wife, married to a feverish and fading much older doctor, sets of a powder keg of lust and sex. Nearly caught up in the crossfire is our beach bum American hero and the wife's new very young and very sexy Dutch maid
"Under Cover Of Night" has our American hero sneaking into the private enclave of a Muslim leader somewhere on the Malay Peninsula to free his old girlfriend from a fate worse than death. The dark brown ruler has ensnared the very pretty and very blonde American woman in a blackmail plot in an attempt to have her become a member of his harem. The horror! "Girl From Thibet" (sic) by Clark Nelson, begins with Dick Blair and Marcia, his bride of but an hour, about to consummate their nuptials. Before that can happen a near naked Marcia is kidnapped by a Tibetan cult and laid on am altar of sacrifice."End of Track" by Stan Warner, is a straightforward romance set in the hobo jungles and nomadic life which afflicted so many during the Great Depression. All in all this is fine issue of a pulp magazine I have come to admire greatly. Originally sold under the counter to red blooded males, the stories are not very scandalous by today's standards. Still, many of the stories will still get the pulse pounding and bring a lusty smile to one's lips. Very much recommended,
